Alonso’s Walk-Off Lifts Mets Over Pirates in Series Opener
The Mets (27–15) pulled out a 4-3 win over the Pirates (14–28) in the first of a three-game series on Monday night at Citi Field. The triumph was backed by scrappy offense and a walk-off sacrifice fly from Pete Alonso. It was the eighth of his career and first since 2023.
New York tallied nine hits and rallied late, capping the night with a one-out push in the ninth. Huascar Brazobán (2-0, 1.08 ERA) earned the win as the Mets improved to 16–4 at home, matching the best 20-game home start in franchise history.
David Peterson started for New York, pitching six innings and allowing two runs on five hits. He struck out seven and walked three, lowering his ERA to 3.05. The lefty worked into the seventh inning for the first time this season but was pulled after a 10-pitch battle with Jared Triolo, who later scored the go-ahead run off reliever José Butto.
At the plate, the Mets got on the board in the fourth, tying the game 1–1 on back-to-back doubles from Brandon Nimmo and Jeff McNeil.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Mets regained the lead. Tyrone Taylor was hit by a pitch, stole second, advanced on a Luisangel Acuña single, and scored on a Juan Soto groundout. Alonso followed with a two-out RBI single to make it 3–2.
Nimmo preserved that lead with a leaping catch to rob a potential home run to start the eighth. Dedniel Núñez followed up with a scoreless frame. Huascar Brazobán took over in the ninth. After two defensive miscues put two Pirates on with no outs, a sacrifice bunt moved the tying and go-ahead runs into scoring position. Pittsburgh tied the game on a single, but a clutch 4-6-3 double play ended the threat and sent the game to the bottom of the ninth tied 3-3.

In the bottom of the ninth, Francisco Lindor got things started with a one-out single. Juan Soto followed with a base hit to right, moving Lindor to third. With runners on the corners, Pete Alonso lifted a fly ball to right field, deep enough for Lindor to tag and score the winning run on a sacrifice fly, giving the Mets a 4–3 walk-off victory.
PLAYER OF THE GAME
Pete Alonso earns Monday’s honor with a 1-for-4 outing at the plate, including two RBIs. Alonso’s two RBIs gave the Mets their lead in the seventh inning and then in the ninth, propelling the club to victory.
