Mets Capture 5-1 Win Over White Sox in Series Opener

The Mets (71-64) took the opening game of their series against the Chicago White Sox (31-104) with a 5-1 win on Friday evening at Guaranteed Rate Field. Strong pitching from Tylor Megill and the bullpen, combined with a solid offensive performance highlighted by ten hits, propelled New York to a victory.

Megill (3-5) brought home the win after tossing 5 1/3 innings, allowing just one run on five hits while striking out six and walking one. Despite allowing an early run in the first, he quickly settled into his groove and kept the White Sox at bay.

Adam Ottavino, Reed Garrett, Phil Maton, and Edwin Díaz all excelled in relief, combining for 3 2/3 scoreless innings with six strikeouts. Díaz, bouncing back from recent struggles, closed out the ninth inning perfectly, marking his first time pitching in three-consecutive days since June 2022.

The Mets got on the board in the second after the club loaded the bases with a pair of singles from Jesse Winker and J.D. Martinez before Jeff McNeil drew a walk. Harrison Bader later came through with an RBI fielder’s choice to make it 1-1. The team went in front when Winker drove in a run on a double in the third inning before Martinez mashed a two-run homer to left field and made it 4-1.

New York added an insurance run in the eight when a Francisco Lindor double and Brandon Nimmo single set up a Mark Vientos sacrifice fly.

PLAYER OF THE GAME

Winker earns Friday’s honors after going 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI.

ON DECK

Jose Quintana (6-9, 4.36 ERA) will take the mound against his former club tomorrow as the Mets look to win the series over the White Sox. Chicago’s starter will be Davis Martin (0-2, 2.96 ERA). SNY will air the game at 7:10 p.m.
