Men's Basketball 

The University of Saint Mary Men's Basketball team went 1-1 this past week as they lost to Bethel College (69-65 OT) but beat Friends (60-58) on Saturday. On Wednesday, the Spires lost a close one in overtime where free throws proved to be the difference maker. Saint Mary shot 50% from the free throw line while Bethel shot 87.5% to rally for the 69-65 overtime win. In the weekend matchup against Friends, Deshaud St. Martin recorded his second consecutive double-double scoring 32 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. Later, Braylen Duncan made two big free throws with six seconds left in the game to secure the thrilling win, 60-58. The Spires are set to hit the road to play Kansas Wesleyan at 8 p.m. on Wednesday in Salina, Kansas.

Women's Basketball

The University of Saint Mary Women's Basketball team went 2-0 this week as they beat Bethel College (76-51) and the Friends Falcons (62-49). On Wednesday, the Spires scored 25 points off of 19 forced turnovers and shot 44.3% from the field as they cruised to a 76-51 win. Over the weekend, Saint Mary rallied after being down 16 to beat Friends 62-49. Alanis Delgado scored a team high 15 points, scoring 13 in the third quarter alone to help spark the comeback. The Spires will travel to play Kansas Wesleyan at 6 p.m. on Wednesday in Salina, Kansas.

Indoor Track and Field

The University of Saint Mary Men's and Women's Indoor Track & Field teams participated in the Washburn Invite on Friday and Saturday, with five runners and two medley teams achieving NAIA marks. Brendan Erwin's time of 8:29.96 in the 3000m event earned him a trip to the podium, taking third in the race and achieving an NAIA A standard. Erwin now has the fastest 3000m time in the KCAC as well. In that same event, Emad Bashir-Mohammed finished just behind Erwin with a time of 8:31.43 and came in sixth. Bashir-Mohammed's time also earned him an NAIA A standard. Maddy Walter-Sherretts came in third place in the 800m race, running a time of 2:17.23 and garnering an NAIA A standard and breaking a program record. In the 3000m event, Alyssa Armendariz and Reagan Hiebert took third and fifth, respectively. Both runner's times earned them NAIA A standards, with Armendariz's time being the fastest in the KCAC for the 3000m. The Spires will be at the KCAC Championships on Friday and Saturday in Wichita, Kansas.

Track and Field Has Another Strong Showing at Washburn Invite

 

Men's Wrestling

The University of Saint Mary Men's Wrestling team hosted the Ottawa Braves on Thursday, resulting in a 49-6 loss. The Spires are now 4-3 in team duals on the year. After a forfeit due to an open 125 weight class, Ethan Woods wrestled in the 133 class for the Spires, getting a takedown early in round two but was not able to come back and fell by decision. Then, in the 141-weight class, David Hunter got Saint Mary their only win of the night, beating his opponent by fall in the first round. The Spires lost the next two matches by fall and went down 29-6. Gabe Chesbro wrestled in the 197-weight class and lost by decision 9-3. Saint Mary will host Baker University at 7 p.m. on Thursday at Ryan Sports Center.

Spires Fall to Ottawa in Home Dual

 

Swimming

The University of Saint Mary Men's and Women's Swim teams competed in the KCAC Championships this weekend. The teams both had the highest finish in program history, broke multiple school records at the three-day event, and had one individual KCAC Champion. Finishing third out of six, the men's swimming team had their highest finish in school history on Sunday. The men's team also broke a total of five program records on the weekend. Braydon Kime ended day two with a come from behind win in the 200yd fly event and became the Spires first ever individual KCAC Champion. The women's team finished fourth out of eight teams in the KCAC, making it their highest-ever team finish as well. Ayla Pierce broke the 200yd individual medley with a time of 2:10.66 and finished in fourth place. On day two, the entire women's team was presented with a banner for receiving the Champions of Character Team of Character award this year. The Spires will send all of the swimmers who have achieved an NAIA A or B cut throughout the year to the NAIA National Championships on March 1 in Columbus, Georgia.

Swim Breaks Multiple Records and Has First Ever Individual Champion at KCAC Meet

Bowling

The Men's and Women's bowling team competed at the Kohawk Invite this past weekend. The men came in 18th out of 19 teams, unfortunately missing bracket play. Coming in 16th place out of 17, the women's team also was unable to make it into bracket play on Sunday. The Spires will be competing in the Wildcat Challenge on Saturday and Sunday in Lawrence, Kansas.

 

eSports

The University of Saint Mary eSports team hosted their first of many local Super Smash Bros winners take all tournaments this week. After the opening rounds, Jacob Lorenzen got the best of Mitch Medford in a five-game series in the bottom half of the bracket. In the lower championship game, Lorenzen took on Krik Zielinski. Zielinski won quickly over Lorenzen by a score of 3-1 in the series, setting up a rematch of the semifinal game against a player unaffiliated with Saint Mary. In the Grand Final game, Zielinski fell 3-0 and took second place overall in the first Super Smash Bro's tournament of the season. Saint Mary will open their Overwatch 2 season against York University at 6 p.m. on Monday.

Men's Tennis

The Men's Tennis team went 0-3 this past week losing to Missouri Baptist University (7-0), McKendree University (6-1), and Lindenwood University (6-1). On Friday against Missouri Baptist, Ryan Fox and Alec Anderson-Conlon came very close to opening the day with a win but could not secure the win and lost their set 6-4. The singles featured very close sets, but the Spires came up short in all of them. Against McKendree, the Spires dropped both of their doubles sets 6-1 and 6-0. For single sets, Fox got Saint Mary their only win of the match, winning 7-4 in the tiebreaker set. Against Lindenwood, Fox again got USM their only win of the match, winning 7-5 and 6-2. Up next, the Spires will travel to play John Brown University at 12 p.m. on February 15 in liberty, Missouri.

Competitive Cheer

The University of Saint Mary Cheer team competed in the Thresher Invite this weekend, coming in second out of 9 total teams. On Friday, the Spires hit zero for the first time all year as they finished second overall with a score of 84.83. On Saturday, the Spires struggled to get going early, but regrouped to earn a score of 74.15. In the last round of the tournament the Spires recorded a score of 74.08 to wrap up the Thresher Invite. Up next, the Spire Cheer team will perform their routine at McGilley Field house for the Dickinson State Virtual Cheer Competition at 7 p.m. on Monday.
