Mets Have Two Catchers Ranked in MLB Pipeline’s Top 40 MLB Prospects

Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

With Francisco Álvarez, Brett Baty, and Alex Ramirez ending the 2022 season on the MLB Pipeline top 100, we expected to see them on their rankings to begin the 2023 season, and they were. The trio of prospects would be joined by Kevin Parada, who was the Mets first round draft pick and 11th overall in the 2022 draft.

That makes four Mets prospects overall in the MLB Pipeline Top 100. They are in a different order than the close of 2022. Notably, Álvarez dropped from the top overall prospect to third overall. The Mets prospects are ranked as follows:

3.  Francisco Álvarez
21. Bretty Baty
36. Kevin Parada
96. Alex Ramirez

While Álvarez dropped down to third overall, he remains the top overall catcher. On Álvarez, MLB Pipeline notes he has the most “raw power on the Top 100 prospects list.” In fact, they say his “swings on contact can be some of the most entertaining in the Minor Leagues” and project him to be a future multiple-time All-Star.

With Álvarez and Parada, the Mets have two of the top three catching prospects in all of baseball. In fact, the Mets are the only organization in baseball to have two catching prospects in the top 100. On Parada, MLB Pipeline says his ” potential with the bat is so good — and his defense generally fair enough — that he profiles as a future bat-first everyday catcher.

Baty returns to the rankings as the second-best overall third base prospect. Baty was the top returning third base prospect, but he dropped because Gunnar Henderson switched from shortstop to third. That was part of a breakout season for Henderson which also saw him leapfrog Álvarez to become the top overall prospect.

MLB Pipeline noted Baty’s improvements with his ground ball rate and his defense. Ultimately, they share the belief he can play left field, but they also believe his ultimate value is as a third baseman saying his “ceiling is at its highest at the hot corner, however, and after the Mets’ Carlos Correa deal fell through, his path to third in Queens should be clear for the taking.”

Finally, Ramirez returned to the rankings, and again, he was ranked toward the bottom. He was referred to as “a toolsy center fielder that scouts and player-development types love to dream on.” It should be noted while everyone is high on him, MLB Pipeline notes he needs a real breakout season with acceleration through the Mets system this year due in large part that he will be Rule 5 eligible after this season.

The four Mets on these rankings is impressive and a sign of an improving organization. However, the Mets are not near the top five in terms of the most prospects on these rankings. Of course, the Mets could very well make headway during this season, and it should be noted Kodai Senga was not ranked despite him being eligible for Rookie of the Year honors.

Over the course of the 2023 season, we may see Jett Williams, who was ranked 98th overall by Baseball America, could soon crack these rankings. Also, Matt Allan, was ranked 75th by MLB Pipeline prior to the 2021 season only to drop off after undergoing Tommy John surgery. By all accounts, Allan has recovered from the surgery and should be ready to pitch in 2023.

Overall, the Mets not only have four prospects in these rankings, but they should have more on the way. More than that, the Mets are building a strong farm system with players ready to contribute in 2023 with more prospects on the way.
