Álvarez Called Up and Ruf Placed on IL; Claudio DFA’D
The Mets made it official on Friday afternoon that top prospect Francisco Álvarez is a big leaguer. The Mets announced they selected the contract of Álvarez from Triple-A Syracuse, placed Darin Ruf on the injured list with a neck strain, and designated left-hander Alex Claudio for assignment.
Álvarez is batting seventh as the designated hitter in his major league debut vs the Braves on Friday night in Atlanta. The 20-year-old will wear no. 50, last worn by Miguel Castro.
Baseball’s top prospect per MLB Pipeline hit .260/.374/.511 with 22 doubles, 27 home runs, and 78 RBIs in 112 games combined between Double-A and Triple-A.
Ruf was hitting .152/.216/.197 with zero home runs in 74 plate appearances with the Mets since he was acquired from the Giants.
Claudio hasn’t allowed a run in three appearances for the Mets this season.
