Buck Showalter's Contract Worth .25M

Buck Showalter will remain in the upper echelon of manager salaries with the Mets. His three-year deal is worth $11.25 million.

Showalter will be paid $3.5 million in 2022, $3.75 million in 2023, and $4.0 million in 2024.

When Showalter was with the Orioles in 2018 his salary was $4 million, according to USA Today. That salary figure placed him in the top five among managers.  At the time Angels manager Mike Scioscia, Cubs manager Joe Maddon, Giants manager Bruce Bochy, topped his salary and he was tied with Indians manager Terry Francona.

Manager salaries can vary greatly. From the same 2018 research done by USA Today, the lowest-paid managers were making $800,000. That mark belonged to Braves manager Brian Snitker and Red Sox manager Alex Cora.

The Mets are clearly paying the price for the experience Showalter provides. Baseball Prospectus has former Mets manager Luis Rojas under the $1 million mark and Mickey Callaway at $850,000. The Mets planned to pay Carlos Beltran $1 million per season from 2020-2022. The one thing in common between them is their status as rookie managers when taking the job.

Showalter earned about $3.5 million annually from the Orioles from 2014-18. When he was hired the deal was worth about $1.5 million annually from 2010-13. When he first started managing the Yankees in 1992 he signed a three-year $1 million contract. He’d go on to coach for the Diamondbacks and Rangers earning $1 million and $1.5 million per year, respectively.

Showalter hasn’t managed a team since 2018 but his experience in over 3,000 games managing in the dugout commands his salary for the next three seasons. It’s likely the price negotiated had to do with dragging him out of a de-facto retirement with the last three seasons spent at home.

Essentially Showalter will make about as much, if not more than, an average middle reliever. Spotrac.com estimates Miguel Castro to earn $2.5 million this season in arbitration and Seth Lugo and Trevor Williams $3.75 million.
