Time to Put 2021 in the Books

Put it in the books. The 2021 Mets season is over.

Seven games back in the division with 11 more to play and 8.5 games back in the Wild Card. The Metropolitans will just be going through the motions these final two weeks.

Attitudes have changed. The usually upbeat and optimistic press conferences of Pete Alonso took a turn toward acceptance of New York’s self-inflicted situation.

Per Fangraphs, they had a 7.6% chance of making the playoffs on September 12. Slim but not impossible odds. Then they lose five of their next six games to drop the odds to 0.5%. Still, that’s five times greater than the current chances of 0.1%.

“Yes, it’s unlikely, that’s just the fact,” Alonso said. “We haven’t played up to our potential and as unfortunate as that is we still have 11 games left. We have to finish the season strong regardless of where we’re at in the standings.”

If there was one video to sum up the feeling toward this season Alonso comes pretty close here.

The offense that was supposed to come around never did. The countless innings put onto the starting pitching staff’s arms eventually caught up with them. The coaching staff’s decision-making gets more maligned with every play.

Nothing has gone right for this team unless your name is Aaron Loup.

It’s Sept. 22 and Noah Syndergaard still hasn’t made a major league appearance. Jacob deGrom‘s undiagnosable injury has kept him out the entire second half. Dominic Smith, Jeff McNeil, Michael Conforto, J.D. Davis all had the worst offensive seasons of their careers. Where are the positives?

Sure Marcus Stroman has pitched to an ERA 3.00 and under all season but they’re 15-17 in his starts. Taijuan Walker was an injury-replacement All-Star who now allows four and a half runs per game. Tylor Megill was fun for about a month. The best thing about all of them is they’re available to pitch every five days.

Looking at just the Mets IL situation you could have a fun game of “let’s remember some guys.” Remember Joey Lucchesi and his churve, remember Jordan Yamamoto who fans begged start over Lucchesi, remember Sean Reid-Foley or Robert Gsellman? What about the Jose Martinez signing?

If you have 10 minutes, try your hand at naming all 63 players to appear in a game for the Mets this season in this Sporcle quiz.

I got 52 out of 63.

2021 will be another season of Mets lore where you look back and think what could have been. The team faces a lot of what-ifs heading into the offseason and you never know if they’ll put together a roster similar in talent to what this team was supposed to be.

The only certainty for 2022 is Robinson Cano‘s unceremonious return.

Maybe it’s beautiful that the Mets season came to its end in Fenway Park on the 35th anniversary of the franchise’s last World Series win. In reality, it’s more frustrating than anything that the team that led the division for over 100 days won’t win just its third division title this millennium.

The curse of not re-signing World Series MVP Ray Knight lives on.
