QUÉBEC USES SEVEN-RUN EIGHTH TO BEAT BOULDERS IN RETURN TO CANADA
Friday night featured a return to Canada for Québec, as well as some late-inning scoring that led to wins for some teams across the league. Read more about all the action that took place with a recap of every game:
In their first game back in Canada, Équipe Québec used a seven-run eighth inning to beat the New York Boulders 10-8. David Glaude got things started for Québec with a two-run home run in the first inning, and Connor Panas followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 3-0 after one inning. New York got on the board in the fourth after Zach Kirtley hit a solo home run and Ray Hernandez connected on a two-run shot that tied the game at 3-3. The Boulders used that momentum to score two more runs in the fifth and one more in the sixth. In the fifth, Kevonte Mitchell singled home a run and Kirtley doubled him home. Milton Smith, Jr. singled home a run in the sixth to make it 6-3 Boulders. Then in the eighth, Québec’s offense exploded for seven runs. Raphael Gladu plated the first run after a fielder’s choice. Jonathan Lacroix followed with an RBI single, and Jesse Hodges hit a two-run double to help Québec regain the lead at 7-6. Gunner Rainey followed that by launching a two-run home run, and Gift Ngoepe doubled home the tenth and final run for Québec. New York tacked on two runs in the ninth with a Tucker Nathans sac fly and a double by Gian Martellini, but their rally fell short.
The Evansville Otters came back from a 3-0 deficit to beat the Southern Illinois Miners 4-3. In the second inning, Luke Mangieri hit a sacrifice fly after an error put runners at second and third, and Jared Mang hit a two-run home run to make it 3-0. Elijah MacNamee then hit a solo home run for the Otters in the bottom half to make it 3-1. An RBI double by J.R. Davis made the score 3-2, and in the seventh, Evansville rallied for two more runs to take the lead. Miles Gordon hit an RBI double to tie the score, and Davis reached on an infield single to plate the eventual winning run.
The Florence Y’alls took an early lead in the first inning and shutout the Lake Erie Crushers 5-0 in the series opener. Harrison DiNicola hit a two-run double in the first to open the scoring. An RBI sacrifice fly from Jordan Brower and an RBI single from Andres Rios extended the lead to 4-0. The fifth and final run came in the seventh inning after an RBI double from Trevor Craport. Starter Frank Valentino took the win after striking out five in five innings of work.
After another strong performance from Kyle Arjona, the Schaumburg Boomers beat the Windy City ThunderBolts 6-2. Angelo Gumbs came through with a two-run single in the first and Matt Bottcher followed with an RBI triple to put the Boomers up 3-0 early. In the third, Schaumburg extended their lead by three more runs. Chase Dawson plated a run on a base hit and Luke Becker’s two-run triple made it 6-0. The ThunderBolts got on the board in the fifth with an RBI groundout by Brynn Martinez. In the ninth, after three walks, the Bolts were able to plate one more run to make it 6-2. Arjona picked up a league-high seventh win with eight strong innings, allowing just a run while walking one and striking out nine.
The Joliet Slammers downed the Gateway Grizzlies 9-3 after a six-run fifth inning. Gateway scored first when Jose Rosario hit an RBI single to make it 1-0. In the bottom half, Braxton Davidson and Brylie Ware hit RBI singles to put Joliet up 2-1. An inning later, Brian Parreira connected on a solo home run to make it 3-1. The Grizzlies tied it in the top of the fourth, when Connor Owings and Ty Moore each hit RBI doubles, but Gateway would fail to score the rest of the way. Ware plated a run with an RBI single, Lane Baremore drove in a run, and Jordan Rathbone scored a run on a sacrifice fly. Then, Tyler Depreta-Johnson hit an RBI single, and two more runs scored on an error by the third baseman to extend the lead to 9-3 for good.
The Washington Wild Things defeated the Tri-City ValleyCats 9-2 after plenty of offense and solid pitching. They scored in the first inning after Bralin Jackson doubled a run home to make it 1-0. The Wild Things plated two more in the second inning when Andrew Czech hit a sacrifice fly and Cam Phelts was walked with the bases loaded to make it 3-0. They added on in the fourth with a sacrifice fly by Jackson, a double by Grant Heyman, and a single by Hector Roa that made it 6-0. Phelts singled home a run in the fifth to make it 7-0 before Tri-City got on the board in the seventh. Nelson Molina hit a two-run home run that made it 7-2. In response, Jackson singled home another run in the bottom half, and Czech drove in the final run with a groundout in the eighth to make it 9-2. Ryan Hennen earned the win with 6.1 innings of two-run ball and struck out nine.
The Sussex County Miners scored a pair of runs in the eighth inning to go in front and beat the New Jersey Jackals 7-5. The Miners opened the scoring in the second with a home run by Kaleo Johnson. New Jersey answered right away with a run scoring on an error, and another run scoring on a single by Josh Rehwaldt to make it 2-1 Jackals. Each team plated three runs in the third inning. For the Miners, Audy Ciriaco singled home a run, Johnson doubled him home and then scored on a wild pitch. For the Jackals, Dalton Combs drove in a run with a groundout, and Justin Wylie hit a two-run shot to make it 5-4 Jackals. That was all the scoring for New Jersey on the night, as Sussex County would later tie the game with a run in the seventh on another Johnson double. They then took the lead in the eighth with a two-run single by Martin Figueroa giving them the 7-5 advantage.
