The Reds got out to an early lead but some bad pitching and defense bring the Brewers back.

The Joe Nuxhall Memorial Honorary Star of the Game

Luis Castillo - 6 IP, 5 H, 0 ER, 3 BB, 8 K

When you pitch like that you’ll always get this award. We probably say this every time he’s pitched lately but it’s really awesome to see him turn it around.

Honorable Mention - Jonathan India gets one for hitting a dinger. Tyler Stephenson went 2 for 4 with a RBI. Michael Lorenzen and Heath Hembree also get a nod for not giving up runs out of the bullpen.

Key Plays

  • The Reds got into some business in the bottom of the second inning. Both Tyler Naquin and Eugenio Suarez walked. Shogo Akiyama grounded to shortstop in what looked to be an easy double play. However, Shogo hustled down the line and the ball was misplayed at first. Shogo would have been safe regardless but the ball got behind the first baseman and Naquin came around to score. I believe they scored an error on the shortstop but the first baseman 100% should have caught the throw. Kyle Farmer then doubled in Akiyama. The Reds lead, 2-0.
  • Nothing much happened through the rest. The Reds offense fell silent. Luis Castillo was breezing through the game up until the fifth and sixth innings. Then he put some runners on the base and his pitch count worked it’s way up. He’d be lifted after the sixth inning and things would get interesting.
  • Amir Garrett was brought into the seventh inning with a clean inning facing him and two lefties coming up. It did not go well. There were two seeing eye singles and then Christian Yelich hit a ball that went about ten feet and barely stayed fair. Stephenson had no choice but to field the ball and get the out at first but a Brewer run would score. Brad Brach entered the game to try and limit the damage. He did not. Wily Adames hit a single that scored the tying run. Naquin made a good throw home but it short hopped Stephenson who couldn’t make a clean grab. If Stephenson made the grab the runner was nailed at the plate. Brach then threw a ball into centerfield on a pick off to second. Luckily, Shogo Akiyama made a fantastic sliding catch in center field that had to be challenged but the runner tagging at third scored. Brach then induced a pop up to end the inning. Brewers lead, 3-2.
  • There was a short rain delay. The game picked back up at 10:40 ET.
  • Michael Lorenzen made his season debut for the Reds. While he got himself into a little bit of trouble, he got a big strikeout to end the threat. It was good to see.
  • In the bottom of the eighth, Jonathan India led off the game with a bomb that smacked off the foul pole in left. Winker struck out but then Tyler Stephenson hit an infield single and Joey Votto walked. David Bell decided to pinch hit Alejo Lopez for Tyler Naquin against the lefty. Lopez flied out to right field. Suarez also flied out to right field to end the threat. The game is tied, 3-3.
  • Aquino took a mighty hack and missed but he did walk to lead off the bottom of the 9th. Farmer cracked a ball down the 3B line that Urias was able to get and turn into an amazing double play. It really sucked for the Reds but it was a fantastic play. The Michael Lorenzen then struck out. Free baseball!
  • To start the 10th, and the runner at second, Osich got a leadoff fly out that advanced the runner. Then a grounder got by the drawn in infield to score the go ahead run. India made a great diving play to save another hit. There was another single but then Osich got out of the inning. Brewers lead, 4-3.
  • The Reds got their chance in the bottom of the 10th. India led off with a smash to third that was misplayed and Lorenzen held at third. Winker smashed a ball to second base that was caught that the Reds were lucky to not get doubled off on. Tyler Stephenson hit a fly ball to left field and Michael Lorenzen was able to score. However, Lorenzen came up lame on his run to home and immediately ran into the clubhouse. It did not look good. Votto then flew out to deep left center field. Tie game again!
  • Doolittle came in for the eleventh inning and gave up a leadoff double to Yelich to score the first run. Then Adames singled. Omar Narvaez hit a ball up the first base line, which Votto nabbed, to get an out but the runners moved up to second and third. Bell went out to bring Ryan Hendrix into the game. Avisail Garcia hit a nubber back to the pitcher and Hendrix tried to make a play at home he had no chance to make. Yelich got under the tag to score another run. Then there was a sac fly to score another run. Finally the Reds got out of the inning but the Brewers lead, 7-4.
  • Votto started the inning at second and Mike Freeman led off with a single to center. Suarez struck out. Aquino worked a ten pitch at bat and Luis Urias made another great defensive play on a diving stab on a liner that would have been foul. Kyle Farmer was then intentionally walked. The Reds had no more choices and had to bring Wade Miley in to pinch hit. Miley did put the bat on the ball but it was a ground out to second base. Brewers win, 7-4.

Other Notes

  • Sonny Gray is scheduled to start Sunday’s game. That is cool.
  • There was a shooting outside the Washington Nationals game tonight which forced the game to be suspended. That is not cool.
  • In the Bottom of the 8th, David Bell chose to pinch hit for Tyler Naquin with a lefty at the plate. Statistically, it was a good move even though it did not work out. The interesting part of the move is that Bell then put Michael Lorenzen in right field. Sadly, Lorenzen got hurt in extra innings running the bases.
