Source: Mets Finalize Insurance Policy For Lindor’s Contract

The New York Mets are covering their nut.

After signing superstar shortstop Francisco Lindor to a 10-year, $341 million deal, the Mets have finalized a two-year, $50 million insurance policy to go along with his hefty contract, per source. The Mets are also paying Lindor $22.3 million this season for the final year of his contract with the Cleveland Indians before his new extension kicks in for 2022.

What this means is, should Lindor miss 60 consecutive games, or 90 total contests, the Mets will not be on the hook if he misses additional time in the next two seasons.

This is a standard procedure for organizations after signing players to substantial long-term contracts. The Mets took out similar policies on both David Wright and Yoenis Cespedes‘ extensions, as well.

As for the length of the policy, this is typical in the insurance field. At the end of the two years, teams will either renew the deal, or seek out a new firm. The policy covers $50 million of Lindor’s contract in the next two seasons should he miss significant time due to injury.

Luckily for both sides, Lindor hasn’t missed more than 19 games in a full season since making his debut back in 2015.

While Lindor has gotten off to a slow start for the Mets this year, he is starting to pick things up at the plate. After snapping a dreaded 0-for-26 stretch offensively, Lindor has gone 6-for-14 with a home run and four RBIs in his last four games.
