Prep roundup: St. Francis’ Jessica Oakland hits two HRs in softball rout of Mitty

Welcome back to the Bay Area News Group (Mercury News & East Bay Times) prep roundup. Here’s the best of Friday’s action in boys and girls basketball, baseball and softball:


Softball

No. 2 St. Francis 10, No. 4 Archbishop Mitty 1

Any hope Mitty had of avenging a loss to St. Francis last week and slowing its West Catholic Athletic League rival’s seasonlong dominance ended in the second inning Friday.

After scoring three in the first, St. Francis, playing on its home field in Mountain View, added five in the second.

Jessica Oakland, the daughter of St.. Francis coach Mike Oakland, hit two home runs to lead the way. The junior finished 3 for 4 with five RBIs and scored three runs.

Sydney Stewart had two hits, including a home run, and knocked in two runs, and Shannon Keighran struck out seven and did not allow an earned run in seven innings.

St. Francis improved to 15-0 and has a run differential of 160-19.

Mitty dropped to 8-2.

The teams meet twice more in the regular season, May 19 at Mitty and May 25 at St. Francis.

Girls basketball

No. 8 San Ramon Valley 88, California 30

Natalie Pasco scored 41 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead San Ramon Valley, playing at home in Danville, to a one-sided victory over California in East Bay Athletic League play.

The Wolves led by 10 after the first quarter, widened the advantage to 42-15 at halftime and cruised to their second consecutive victory to open the season.

San Ramon Valley beat Granada 71-32 on Thursday.

Kelly Tumlin scored 11 points for California (1-4).

No. 1 Archbishop Mitty 82, Presentation 26

Mitty, playing at home in San Jose, completed a sweep of Presentation as Olivia Williams (15 points), Amelia Scharpf (14 points) and Jamaya Perry (10 points) scored in double figures for the Monarchs.

The hosts led 43-22 at halftime and then outscored the Panthers 28-4 in the third quarter.

Mitty (3-1) visits No. 4 Bishop O’Dowd today.

No. 2 Pinewood 84, Half Moon Bay 38

Una Jovanovic finished with 21 points and Annika Decker added 16 to lead Pinewood (5-0) to a victory on the road over Half Moon Bay.

The Panthers also got 13 points from Chance Bucher and 12 from Courtni Thompson.

Pinewood next plays at Menlo School on Wednesday.

Half Moon Bay fell to 3-3.

Boys basketball

No. 4 Archbishop Mitty 55, No. 2 Bellarmine 53

Pepperdine-bound Michael Mitchell scored 12 of his 23 points in the fourth quarter — including 10 in the final five minutes — as Mitty rallied on the road to complete a sweep of Bellarmine in WCAL play.

No. 5 Salesian 73, Pinole Valley 41

Salesian, playing on the road, stretched its winning streak to five games with a decisive victory over Pinole Valley in Tri-County Athletic League play.

The Pride led 21-6 after the first quarter, withstood a second-quarter rally as Pinole Valley (2-3) cut its deficit to 34-27 at halftime and then put the score out of reach in the third quarter.

Salesian (5-2) outscored Pinole 20-11 in the third and 19-3 in the fourth.

The Pride plays host to Hercules on Tuesday.

No. 7 Dublin 60, Foothill 55

Its season delayed because of COVID-19 protocols, Dublin began what will be a three-week sprint to the finish line — 15 games in 21 days — with a narrow victory on its home court in EBAL play.

The score was tight throughout.

Dublin led by one point after the first quarter, at halftime and at the end of the third quarter. The Gaels then held off the visitors down the stretch.

Foothill, which dropped to 1-4, plays host to Dublin tonight.

Valley Christian 64, St. Francis 56

Valley Christian, playing at home in San Jose, split its two-game WCAL series against St. Francis as sophomore Pasha Goodarzi (16 points), senior Pawllos Habtom (15) and freshman Marcus Washington (12) scored in double figures for the Warriors.

St. Francis (2-2) won 50-43 on Wednesday.

The victory Friday was Valley’s second in its last 15 games against the Lancers.

No. 15 Washington-Fremont 68, American 42

Washington, playing on its home court, bounced back from a loss at Moreau Catholic on Wednesday to beat American in Mission Valley Athletic League play. 

Jorren Edmonds (25 points), Alex Martin (17) and Joseph Mangonon (10) led the way for the Huskies (3-1).

Moreau Catholic 80, Mission San Jose 46

Moreau Catholic improved to 3-1 on the season with a one-sided victory at home over Mission San Jose in an MVAL game.

The Mariners got 16 points from JJ Langford, 15 points and 10 rebounds from Mahda Fallay, 11 points from Jimon Campbell and 10 points each from Donovan Tynes and Trey Knight.

Baseball

No. 3 Palo Alto 6, No. 6 Los Gatos 3

Palo Alto finished off a sweep of Los Gatos in Santa Clara Valley Athletic League De Anza Division play behind two hits and two RBIs from Xavier Esquer.

Tommy Hall, Zander Darby and Ritter Amsbaugh also drove in runs and Aidan Berger had two hits and scored a run for Palo Alto (11-2).

Amsbaugh also pitched 6 1/3 innings.

Los Gatos (9-5) beat Palo Alto 17-5 in a non-league game on April 21. The two games this week were league games.

No. 9 De La Salle 7, Foothill 5 (10 innings)

sent a fastball soaring over the right-field fence for a two-run, game-ending home run in the bottom of the 10th inning as De La Salle won in EBAL play.

The shot, Donnelly’s third home run of the season, extended De La Salle’s winning streak to seven games.

Donnelly, a Cal commit, scored three runs and also knocked in three runs for the Spartans (14-4).

Track and field

Bellarmine recorded the top time in the nation in the 4×1,600 at the prestigious Arcadia Invitational, crossing the finish line in 17:28.37. The previous top time was 17:53.

Seniors Daniel Vaca, Nolan Topper, Galen Topper and Colin Peattie ran for Bellarmine.

The score was tied 1-1 after seven innings.

Foothill scored four in the top of the eighth, but De La Salle answered with four in the bottom half of the inning.

Matt Ager struck out eight in 7 1/3 innings for Foothill. The only run he allowed was unearned.

“Hard fought game by both teams,” DLS coach David Jeans said on Twitter.

No. 4 San Ramon Valley 3, Doughtery Valley 2

San Ramon Valley stretched its winning streak to six games as Noah Garcia had two doubles and knocked in two runs and Ruben Rivera pitched five innings of two-run ball.

Doughtery Valley (9-11) scored two in the top of the first.

San Ramon Valley scored its runs in the first, fourth and fifth innings to complete a three-game sweep of the Wildcats and improve to 13-4.

Mountain View 3, Los Altos 0

Gabe Barrett, back on the mound for the first time since he pitched a no-hitter with 17 strikeouts against Wilcox, was dominant again in a victory over Los Altos.

The senior struck out 14 and scattered six hits without a walk to win for the fourth time in four starts.

He has 53 strikeouts with 10 walks and has allowed only one run in 26 innings. His ERA is 0.27.

Mountain View improved to 8-2. Los Altos fell to 5-7.
