While speaking to reporters following Thursday afternoon’s 4-1 series finale win over the St. Louis Cardinals, New York Mets manager Luis Rojas had some good news to share on the Jacob deGrom injury-front.

As expected, deGrom played catch at Busch Stadium on Thursday morning after receiving clearance from the Mets’ medical staff. The right-hander was able to reach up to 90 feet, and all went as planned.

Rojas said the next step is for deGrom to play catch again on Friday afternoon at Citi Field, and possibly throw a bullpen session as well. If all goes as planned again, the Mets’ ace could return to the mound on Sunday afternoon in the series finale against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

DeGrom, of course, was scratched from his start against the Cardinals on Tuesday night due to right side tightness. The righty went for an MRI that night, and thankfully for the Mets, the results revealed only inflammation in his right lat.

Speaking to reporters for the first time since the injury on Wednesday afternoon, deGrom said despite the scare, he’s “feeling good.”

DeGrom got off to an incredible start for the 2021 season, as he posted an incredible 0.51 ERA, 0.57 WHIP, and 59 strikeouts in 35 innings of work which was good enough to take home the National League Player of the Month for April.
