Christian Yelich heads to injured list with injured back

MLB: Milwaukee Brewers at St. Louis Cardinals

One of the leagues unsung superstars can’t seem to catch a break.

Christian Yelich came into the 2021 season with a lot to prove. Yelich was well on his way to an MVP award in 2019 before fouling a ball of his knee which broke his kneecap and since that point in time, he has really struggled. The 2020 season felt like a lost season for him as he slashed .205/.356/.430 and very clearly did not look like himself.

As a result, Yelich was looking to get back to the form that saw him as one of the league’s absolute best hitters and won him an NL MVP in 2018. Going into the season, he appeared to be healthy again, but after a few games, he was held out of the Brewers’ lineup with stiffness in his back. The team had hoped that a few games off would do the trick and, well, it didn’t work out that way.

Yelich has dealt with back issues in the past as he had to pull out of the 2019 Home Run Derby with a back ailment, so hopefully this isn’t indicative of a long term problem for him, but his recent history does make one wonder. On top of that, that the Brewers felt the need to make a roster move and put him on the IL could indicate that his absence could be more than a few more games.
