Patience Is A Virtue and Its Name is Brandon Nimmo

Centerfielder Brandon Nimmo continued his torrid start to the season with another strong performance on Tuesday, in the New York Mets’ doubleheader sweep of the Phillies.

Nimmo was on-base five times, going a combined 3-for-6, with two walks, one run scored, and three RBIs on the day.

He is now batting a staggering .435/.581/.565 in 32 plate-appearances this season, and in fact, the Wyoming native leads the major leagues in on-base percentage.

He also became the first Mets player to reach base two or more times in the team’s first seven games of the season, closing in on David Wright, who holds the franchise record with ten such games to start the season.

It’s been quite a journey for the 13th overall pick in the 2011 MLB draft. I still vividly recall all the jokes and laughter after the Mets selected Nimmo.

Much was made of the fact that Nimmo did not play baseball in high school because there is no high school baseball league in Wyoming. He only played American Legion ball. The “LOL Mets” hashtag was in full throttle on social media.

But here we are 10 years later, and perhaps it’s the Mets who will get the last laugh, as they watch Brandon Nimmo blossom into the lead-off hitter they’ve been craving for since Jose Reyes packed his bags for the sunny sands of South Beach, Florida.

Many questioned the wisdom of Mets vice president Paul DePodesta and scouting director Chad McDonald.

Especially when they still had top-ranked pitchers Sonny Gray and Jose Fernandez on the board as well as polished hitters C.J. Cron and Kolten Wong.

Mets fans weren’t too happy either as the pick was widely panned on MLB Network and considered a reach.

Still, DePodesta and McDonald had all the confidence in the world in their 18-year old wunderkind and had the full backing of general manager Sandy Alderson.

“We weren’t interested in making the safest pick,” said McDonald. “We were interested in the pick that could have the most impact.”

Nimmo, who just turned 28, is now one of the team’s most highly valued commodities, and the on-base machine is setting himself up for a huge payday in the very near future.

With only one final year of arbitration left and free agency beckoning after the 2022 season, the calls for an extension are getting louder and louder for Nimmo.

Nobody knows how this drama will ultimately play out. But in the words of the immortal Sean Connery, “Here endeth the lesson..”

Don’t judge a draft pick before he can show you what he can do. Patience is a virtue and its name is Brandon Nimmo. Enjoy the spectacle.
