An absolute snoozer of a series finale.

The Joe Nuxhall Memorial Honorary Star of the Game

On a day when the bats remained painfully quiet, at least the Cincinnati Reds got some promising results from their arms.

Tyler Mahle got the start, and looked (and was) positively unhittable for a time. Considering he entered having allowed nary a hit in 4 IP in his previous start, it’s something of an indication that he’s finding his groove as a dart-throwing dynamo in this rotation, something that’ll be much needed this season (more on that below).

His final line ended up more pretty dang solid than great, but it was overall a start that should’ve been good enough to get the job done had the offense done, well, anything.

Mahle fired 5 innings of 2 ER ball, yielding 3 H and a BB while fanning 7 on 89 pitches. In this day and age, that’s pretty much exactly what the Reds dugout would hope to get.

Key Plays

  • Mahle took a no-hitter into the Bottom of the 5th, but that was busted up by a dink of a single into shallow RF by Donovan Solano. Solano was out a batter later on Brandon Crawford’s dink that was dropped by Eugenio Suarez in LF (but ended up as a force-out at 2B), but Crawford then scored on a double into the gap by Austin Slater. Slater took 3B on a Tyler Stephenson passed ball, and scored a batter later when Suarez’s throw home on a Curt Casali grounder right at him was too wide for Stephenson to make the tag. Casali then scooted home on a 2-out, 2-strike single into RF by Tommy La Stella and slid in just before Stephenson’s tag, but replay showed his leg never actually touched home, and the Reds were bailed out big time. Still, the Reds trailed, 2-0.
  • The Giants tacked on a final run in the Bottom of the 8th after a walk, a balk, and intentional walk, and a dropped bloop by Jonathan India in shallow RF, and that finished off the Reds for a rousing, electric, unforgettable 3-0 snoozer.

Other Notes

  • Crap news! Michael Lorenzen’s shoulder is balkier than first feared, and the Reds had to move him to the 60-day IL today. Nerbs.
  • Good news! Sonny Gray is back, and will be activated to start Saturday against Cleveland.
  • Crap news! Johnny Cueto was absolutely dealing today against the Reds, but was forced to exit in the Top of the 6th after just 68 pitches after he obviously tweaked something while delivering a pitch. Fingers crossed Johnny’s a-ok, and soon.
  • It’s an off-day tomorrow as the Reds head back home to GABP after this two-city West Coast swing. Jeff Hoffman will get the nod on Friday when the Reds return to action with Cleveland in the visitors dugout, with first pitch for the series opener set for 7:10 PM ET.
