San Jose Sharks vs. Anaheim Ducks News, Analysis, and Picks

You would have been right to write off the San Jose Sharks season three weeks ago, but they’ve used a 7-4-0 run to climb back into the post-season conversation in the NHL West Division. The Sharks sit four points back of the St. Louis Blues for the final spot, with two games in hand. They blew their chance against the Anaheim Ducks last week, but don’t expect them to make that mistake again.

The Sharks have their advanced metrics working in their favor. They have posted an expected goals-for percentage above 50.0% in six of their last eight games at five-on-five. They’ve been on a similar run at home, in which they have outplayed their opponents in six of their last nine.

Anaheim has struggled all season, and their recent sample is no different. The Ducks have posted an expected goals-for percentage below 50.0% in seven of their last eight. They had a run of success in which they overachieved relative to their season-long shooting percentage, but that has since come down, and they appeared to have entered a correction phase, failing to record a goal at five-on-five in each of their last two games.

Anaheim is a team rumored to have suitors for some of their key players. Not only are they at a disadvantage with their on-ice product, but they may also be shorthanded as players are dealt ahead of the trade deadline. The Sharks are catching up with the teams above them in the standings and can’t afford to miss out on the two points tonight.

The Bet: Sharks -188

Ottawa Senators vs. Winnipeg Jets, Moneyline, Total, and Odds

Moneyline: Senators +160, -190

Spread: Senators +1.5 (-170), Jets -1.5 (+140)

Total: o6.5 -102

Odds to Stanley Cup: Senators +25000|Jets +2000

Ottawa Senators vs. Winnipeg Jets News, Analysis, and Picks

The Winnipeg Jets continue their five-game road trip against the Ottawa Senators Monday night for the first of two games. The Jets have been playing above their metrics for a prolonged period and are due for a letdown. We’re picking Monday night against the Sens to be that spot.

Winnipeg has a way of getting wins. When their offense lets them down, Connor Hellebuyck has a big game and steals the win. When Hellebuyck has an off night, the offense steps up and bails him out. At five-on-five, this has resulted in one of the more disproportionate rations between goals-for percentage and expected goals-for percentage. The Jets rank 29th in the league in expected goals-for percentage but 13th in actual goals-for percentage.

That’s been the pattern over the Jets’ recent sample as well. Winnipeg has been outplayed in five of their last seven, which would imply that they would have two wins in a perfectly balanced world. However, they have picked up four wins over that span.

The Jets PDO over their last 10 games also implies that they are due for regression. Winnipeg has compiled a 1.055 PDO, bringing their season-long average to 1.014, which puts them ninth in the league. The Jets are on an unsustainable path and are due for correction.

On the other end of the ice, the Sens are trending upwards. They have outplayed two of their last three opponents at five-on-five but still don’t have any wins to show for their efforts. Their cumulative expected goals-for percentage is 51.6%, and their actual percentage is 42.9%. Wins should follow the Sens as they continue to outplay their opponents.

The Sens are a good team on home ice, and the Jets haven’t traveled well this season. Ottawa ranks 16th in the league with an expected goals-for percentage of 50.0%, whereas Winnipeg ranks 30th in the league in expected goals-for on the road. Ottawa shouldn’t be +160 underdogs.

The Bet: Ottawa +160
