sterlingice thought it was a slow day on Thursday for Royals news. Friday was worse.

Vahe Gregorian at The KC Star caught up with old friend, Alex Gordon, to see how retirement was suiting him.

“So it’s good to just be able to wake up and be in that routine with them, cooking them breakfast, getting them ready and taking them to school and whatnot,” said Gordon, noting he’s glad his presence frees up Jamie to be more able to follow her own interests and volunteer work.

The simple pleasures of all this perhaps are what resonate most with Gordon, who said he never stopped loving playing but that he had been “kind of looking forward to the end as far as being around those activities … and just being around my kids more in general.”

When do we start worrying about Andrew Benintendi at the plate? — Ryan B.

Let’s start with the numbers. Through five games, Benintendi’s zone contact percentage was 67.5 percent, meaning he made contact on only 67.5 percent of pitches in the strike zone. That’s the lowest percentage in his career. It’s also well below the league average (82.2 percent).

Even more concerning is that many of these pitches were fastballs. Of the 91 pitches Benintendi saw, 69.2 percent of them were fastballs, and he whiffed at 33.3 percent of them. (In 2017, he whiffed at only 15.1 percent of fastballs.) Overall, in 23 plate appearances, he’s batting .190/.261/.190.

2021’s first no-hitter happened in a really cool way last night.
