Two of Cleveland’s best offensive players have been sent home for the time being

Cleveland third baseman José Ramírez and designated hitter Franmil Reyes have been sent home after self-reporting that they broke COVID-19 protocols. According to the team, they are awaiting word from the league about when they can return to spring training.

Manager Terry Francona confirmed the news at his media session today. Reyes got his haircut and the two of them ate inside of a restaurant — both violations of MLB’s health and safety protocols laid out ahead of spring training.

For Spring Training, Championship Season and postseason, Covered Individuals may not attend indoor gatherings of 10 or more people, indoor restaurants, bars and lounges, fitness and wellness centers, entertainment venues, gaming venues (e.g., casinos) or any other activity that is prohibited by state or local governments.**

This is Franmil Reyes’ second COVID-19 violation since the rules were put in place ahead of last year’s shortened season. He was previously cited and sent home during last year’s “spring training 2.0” after he attended a Fourth of July event and was seen in photos on social media not wearing a mask.

Cleveland is scheduled to play the Athletics today at 3:05 p.m. ET with Yu Chang at third base and Ryan Lavarnway at DH.
