One of the last remaining free agent starting pitcher options is off the board, as right-hander Jake Odorizzi has reportedly agreed to a two-year deal with the Houston Astros. Jeff Passan of ESPN had the news first.

Odorizzi’s name was connected to the Mets many times throughout this offseason as they looked to fill out their starting rotation. They ended up settling for acquiring Carlos Carrasco Joey Lucchesi and Taijuan Walker, while Marcus Stroman accepted the qualifying offer.

Odorizzi, 30, struggled in very limited action in 2020, with a 6.59 ERA in just four starts. However, in 2019 he posted a 3.51 ERA with a 10.08 K/9 and 4.3 fWAR. He’s a solid addition to any team’s middle of the rotation, but the Mets surely felt less inclined to go after him once they traded for Carrasco and bolstered their depth with Lucchesi and Walker.

The two-year agreement comes with a player option, according to Passan. Jon Heyman of MLB Network pointed out that the Astros’ need for a starting pitcher became more dire after Framber Valdez endured a bad finger injury which will sideline him for a significant amount of time.
