Morning Briefing: More Mickey Callaway Allegations Surface

Good morning, Mets fans!

More allegations of misconduct by Mickey Callaway came to light Tuesday in a report by The Athletic. The allegations come on the back of a report from February, where five women accused Callaway of unwanted sexual advances and harassment.

In the latest story, reporters Brittany Ghiroli and Katie Strang detail behavior by Callaway while part of the Cleveland organization and what happened in the Mets organization when those issues came to light.

They say Callaway’s behavior, which include multiple extramarital affairs, unwanted advances toward team employees and girlfriends of other players, and explicit pictures sent to women, was described by “worst-kept secret in baseball” by a former Cleveland employee and started as early as 2010 when he was a minor league pitching coach.

The article says in 2018, the Mets were informed of Callaway having previously sent “unsolicited pornographic material” to the wife of a man who had previously reached out to Cleveland to inform them while he was coaching for that organization. He said, “I would like to think that if the Mets were aware of this situation, they would not want this type of person as their employee representing their organization.”

The following day, the Mets’ lawyer at the time, David Cohen, told Callaway “the issue had been handled” and that Callaway shouldn’t reveal the email to anyone else. When pressed on the issue, Callaway said it was in the past and he was working on his marriage with his wife, according to the article. We know the Mets were made aware in August 2018 of an incident regarding Callaway from before he was the team’s manager from the first report from The Athletic, as well, and this could be that incident.

Callaway is currently the pitching coach for the Los Angeles Angels and is under suspension while an investigation into his alleged misconduct continues.

Now let’s get into the morning briefing.
