Taking the mound for the first time in about a year, New York Mets starting pitcher Marcus Stroman got his spring off to a very strong start, tossing a pair of perfect innings in Tuesday’s 2-0 win over the Houston Astros at Clover Park.

Following his outing, Stroman told reporters via Zoom he “feels great, super blessed, super grateful to be in the position I am right now. Super calm, clear. I just feel like I’m in a great place to go out there and perform well and keep my happiness through it all.”

The crafty right-hander needed just ten pitches to retire the Astros in order in the top of the first. He then returned to the mound for a second inning of work, and again set the Astros down in order, with a pair of strikeouts of Jason Castro and Bryan De La Cruz.

Stroman had his off-speed pitches working, particularly his new split-change, which he developed over the offseason. Stroman said postgame that he loves the new pitch and he felt it was extremely encouraging to see the results he did today.

“I’ve never really had a changeup my entire career, I’ve pretty much pitched off sinker/slider. To have that weapon in my back pocket as one of those pitches at the end of my repertoire feels really good,” Stroman said.

Mets catcher James McCann was behind the plate on Tuesday afternoon, and he also was impressed with the pitch, and felt it will be a nice addition to Stroman’s arsenal.

“He’s always been a sinker/slider guy, so he’s always been east-west, so mixing in that split-change he can work south. He’s able to throw it to both sides of the plate which is really impressive.. I think it’s going to be a big weapon for him,” McCann said postgame.

Stroman bet on himself this offseason, accepting the Mets’ one-year qualifying offer. The right-hander opted out of the 2020 season, but posted a 3.77 ERA, 4.15 FIP, and 1.47 WHIP over eleven starts after being traded to the Mets at the 2019 trade deadline.

As currently constructed, Stroman is slotted in behind Jacob deGrom and Carlos Carrasco in the Mets’ starting rotation. A big season from the right-hander could go a very long way for the 2021 New York Mets.
