Hunter Dozier wants to be a Royal4Life.

Royals Rumblings - News for March 2, 2021

Hunter Dozier is glad to put the business of baseball behind him, writes Lynn Worthy.

“I’m not a big fan of the business side of baseball,” Dozier said during a video conference call. “You grow up loving this game just because you love baseball, then as you get drafted the business side does come into it. And it’s a blessing because you can provide for your family.

“Now, I can kind of not think about the business side of baseball and just really focus on winning and having fun and doing whatever I can do to help that team win. And we’re going to do a lot of winning. I can promise you that.”

Anne Rogers writes that Dozier wants to stay in Royal blue.

“If I could choose, I would be a Royal for life,” Dozier said. “This is the best organization in sports. It was a very easy decision for me. I want to be here. I want to win here.

“The last eight years have been amazing, but this is, for me, it’s just the beginning.”

Dan Szymborski at Fangraphs looks at Dozier’s projections.

Similarly, if there’s a way to make a deal with a local favorite, the Royals will try to keep them on the roster, even if it doesn’t make complete baseball sense. A lot of teams in their position would go into full-on Sherman tank mode, but they are at least putting an interesting team on the field in 2021. I think they’re still a long shot to make the playoffs, but at least fans can still see Merrifield and Salvador Perez in Royal blue.

Mike Matheny was impressed with Michael Taylor’s defense.

Royals manager Mike Matheny added: “His arm is even better than what I remembered it being. ... I think he’s going to be able to enjoy using his speed and to roam and to use his athleticism. He fits in really well for what we want to do defensively. We want to be an airtight-style defense that’s taking away runs all the time, and Michael is excited about his role with that.”

David Lesky looks at the Royals rookies who could debut this year, like lefty Daniel Lynch.

I’d be surprised if Lynch isn’t up and isn’t up at some point in the first half. He has good enough command and good enough stuff that I think he’ll be at least as successful as Brady Singer and Kris Bubic were in 2020. I don’t think there’s a huge chance of him being actually bad unless the stage is too big for him, but I could see a range of Rookie of the Year talk to being sort of whatever, though I’d give it better odds that he’s closer to the former.

Tristan Cockcroft of ESPN isn’t as high on Adalberto Mondesi as others are for fantasy baseball.

Mondesi is super-quick and he’s got some pop, and with relative luck in the injury department he’d probably have an easy path to 15 homers and 40 stolen bases, but his injury history isn’t as clean as you might think, and his aggressive approach at the plate leads to some slumps at either extreme of the scale. I don’t think you can draft Mondesi assuming anything other than his being the game’s top source of steals, but that’s not the way I usually fill that category, and it’s certainly not at the price of a top-25 overall pick, which is where he has been going on average in NFBC-style, 15-team drafts so far this winter and preseason.
