The mess in Seattle continues with Kevin Mather self-imploding.

Welcome to ‘Marty’s Musings’, my weekly column of numbers summarizing the happenings in the baseball world. I am your guide for taking an analytic look at the news and notes throughout the game, and highlighting key pitching matchups.

Games are back this week, COVID-19 testing has started, there are fans at games...oh and Mariners shoot themselves in the foot yet again.

News & Notes

45 - Minutes is all it took for Mariners executive Kevin Mather to blow himself out of a job. In a speech to the Rotary Club about minimizing costs and running a profitable P&L in the times of COVID-19, Mather basically bragged about all the cost-cutting things he has done to increase the bottom-line for the Mariners. While few can take issue with the truth that Mather spoke, it’s basically what most teams are doing for financial gain that they are constantly saying are misinterpreted. Keeping players in the minors for cost-effectiveness, cutting translators for foreign players, and disparaging players throughout the presentation and on-and-on.

Much of what Mather said about baseball operations is neither untrue, nor unique...he’s just the one exec who was naïve enough to say it in public and think it wasn’t going to be a problem.

1- Year, $4 million contract the Yankees and outfield veteran Brett Gardner agreed to last week. Gardner will likely serve as a fourth outfielder, something the Yankees have used a lot of in the past few years, including having six outfielders play in at least 20 games in the shortened 2020 season.

3 - Positive COVID tests last week, a positive rate of 0.3 percent. Last year MLB got off to a bumpy start, with a myriad of positives test the first 30 days. With more vaccine distribution, hopefully 2021 goes smoother.

13.5 - Million dollars that Rockies outfield veteran Ian Desmond is leaving on the table after announcing he will be opting-out of the 2021 season, as he did last year.

31 - Days until the planned Opening Day 2021!
