In anticipation of fans hopefully being able to attend games

Fans weren’t allowed to attend 2020 Oakland A’s games because of the coronavirus pandemic, but there’s hope of returning to the Coliseum in 2021.

The A’s announced FlexTix on Wednesday, on sale now, allowing fans to buy vouchers that can be redeemed for 2021 tickets. It’s not yet known when California sports teams will be allowed by the government to re-open their doors to the public, but other states have already begun doing so.

Per the team’s press release, which you can also read in full:

A’s FlexTix are available in four, eight, 16, and 32 vouchers in three seating levels: Field Level, Plaza Level, and Bleachers. FlexTix can be redeemed in seating “pods” of two or four tickets only, which follows social distancing guidelines as required by state and local health officials.

Each voucher equals one regular season ticket, and those who buy them will receive a window of first priority in mid-March before normal ticket sales begin. Vouchers must be used in 2021, but if games are canceled or fan attendance becomes prohibited again then they can be rolled to 2022 or refunded.

In other words, if you want to go to some A’s games this year, then you can lock that in now and choose the exact date later. You don’t have to do it this way, as individual tickets will also go on sale eventually, but the vouchers figure to offer the best prices and — in a concept foreign to A’s fans — the best guarantee of getting the dates and seats you want.

That’s because capacity will be limited, probably significantly, though the precise figure is not yet determined. In one potential example, this week New York opened up stadiums to 10% level. A’s president Dave Kaval mentioned 20% as a possible reference point, and that’s also roughly the capacity expected for Hohokam Stadium for the team’s Cactus League games this spring.

Children under 24 months do not require a ticket and don’t count toward the pod limits, notes Kaval. That’s important because seating is only available in either pairs or groups of four, meaning that two people with a child below that age can sit in a two-person pod rather than needing to upgrade to four.

As for season tickets and A’s Access, those programs will not be available in 2021, with only single games up for purchase. Anyone with money already invested in those temporarily dormant programs will get a 5% discount in 2022 to make up for the time value, says Kaval. There will also not be any walk-up sales at the gate, with tickets sold only in advance.

Oh, and one more important note from Kaval: No tarps.
