Dominic Smith Focused on Becoming More Athletic and Improving Swing

Dominic Smith is entering 2021 focused and with the mentality of improving his athleticism and swing. When he interviewed Barry Bonds on Sunday, one common theme between the two sluggers was their swing and approach at the plate. Smith stated he was shocked with how similar his swing was to Bonds.

One takeaway Smith had from that conversation was to focus more on putting good swings on pitches and having a good approach. “I know I have power. I know I can hit 25 to 30 plus bombs,” he said. But this season, Smith is focused more on his approach and hitting the ball well every time he has the opportunity to come to the plate.

Smith said he was also inspired by Bonds and is excited to get out in the outfield this season. “I know I can play left field, right field. I’m competitive,” stated Smith, who said he worked out at A2D sports in California during the offseason, trying to improve his speed and agility.

Entering the 2021 season, Smith literally has new focus and energy, as well. He has struggled with sleep apnea in the past, but now sleeps with a CPAP machine, which he states has allowed him to sleep better, perform better, and actually set up pitchers because he can focus more during an at-bat.

When it comes to facing challenges, something Smith is familiar with, he said “the harder it gets, it just brings the character out of a person.” Smith was inspired by Bonds’ personality and playing mentality. He talked about how having a positive outlook on the game and on life is key. He comes in focused and ready for 2021, saying “I won’t be happy and satisfied until we walk away with that World Series ring.”
