Unleash the pitchers!

Royals Rumblings - News for February 25, 2021

Mike Matheny is confident Hunter Dozier can rebound to his 2019 numbers, writes Anne Rogers.

“I felt like he was fighting it a little bit last year and just finding his rhythm,” Matheny said. “I know he’s excited to be back on the infield. He loves being over there. He’s moving around really well. I’m just hoping that we can get him consistent work, health, that we can see the next step forward from what we were starting to see in ‘19.”

Dayton Moore says you won’t see the minor leaguers who missed last year in many MLB spring training games.

“The Asa Lacys of the world and guys like that, we probably won’t give him too much game time especially early,” general manager Dayton Moore said Tuesday. “We’ll just see how it plays out late if there’s any innings for him.”

She also writes about how the infield shapes up this year.

Royals pitchers may not be limited this year, writes Lynn Worthy.

“I don’t think it’s smart to go out of the gate with that number in your head,” Royals manager Mike Matheny said. “This game has a way of kind of taking care of some of that stuff. I think if we go in half-stepping, we’re going to have some regrets.

“So I believe those are adjustments that we make as we go. Right now, we’re going to prepare every one of these guys like last year was a normal season, like this year is a normal season.”

In his Mellinger Minutes, Sam Mellinger writes about some of the storylines for the Royals this season.

It becomes a bit of a litmus test on the front office, too. That’s an interesting situation, and we’ve talked about this before but it’s worth repeating. The Royals have one of the most stable front offices in baseball, but they also lost 207 games in the last two full seasons and haven’t had a winning record since 2015.

Owner John Sherman likes and respects Dayton Moore and his assistants, but this is a different dynamic than existed between Moore and David Glass. I’m not telling you that Moore is on the hot seat. I’m telling you that strong performances by the additions would matter for more reasons than the win-loss record.

Craig Brown writes about the philosophy of Dayton Moore.

This isn’t to say Moore shouldn’t be immune to criticism. (If he brings back Betancourt for a third go-round so help me…) But he’s made moves this winter with the idea he’s making his team more competitive and I think he’s accomplished that. The Royals are better today and their potential for tomorrow has in no way been compromised. They are on the right path. And Moore has operated in a way that makes Kansas City a destination. The Royals aren’t some small market team crying poor and tearing their team down every winter. They’re building toward something. They’re doing it the right way. And the players take notice.

David Lesky tells us what he would have done this off-season if he ran the Royals.

Personally, I’d have probably gone for a pitcher with some more upside, though Minor isn’t without upside entirely. Garrett Richards or Corey Kluber would have been fun, but I don’t think they were really an option for Kluber. I was a big fan of Taijuan Walker as well, but given that he just signed, maybe he wasn’t an option. Again, I have no real issues with Minor, but I probably would have gone one of these other directions.

Orioles prospect DL Hall reveals a draft nugget in his interview with David Laurila.

“I had a lot of talks with Kansas City, who picked 14th. I really thought that’s where I was going land, but they passed up on me at the last second. That’s what I was told.”
