Free-agent outfielder Enrique (Kiké) Hernández has “made progress on a deal” with the Boston Red Sox, according to Jon Morosi of MLB Network.
In a separate tweet, Morosi noted that the deal could be completed by the end of the weekend, though nothing is set in stone. Based on the last couple of weeks in free agency, there is still a long way to go between “making progress on a deal” and actually having an agreement in place.
Hernández is a solid utilityman that can play basically every position on the field to go along with an average bat. He has been on the Mets’ radar as of late, and the Mets were said to be “heavily involved” with the former Dodgers both before and after Jared Porter’s firing.
Jon Heyman makes sure to note the Mets are the “main competitor” to the Red Sox for Hernández’s services right now. The 29-year-old would slot in nicely as a right-handed-hitting outfielder or second baseman for either team competing to sign him.
