Blue Jays Tabbed as Frontrunners for George Springer

Updated 10:25 PM EST: According to Jon Morosi of MLB Network, “the Blue Jays are now the frontrunners to sign George Springer”, noting reports from Brendon Kuhn of Jays Nation and Joey Vendetta of SportsNet of an agreement in place pending physicals.

Minutes before Morosi’s update, Jon Heyman of MLB Network reported “there’s a sense the Jays are gaining momentum”, adding that Springer’s total contract value could top $125 million.

Ben Nicholson-Smith of SportsNet added, per source, that Springer was “impressed” with Toronto’s pitch. A young offensive core consisting of Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Bo Bichette, Cavan Biggo, Teoscar Hernandez, and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. is quite the selling point.

Morosi notes that Springer “could finalize his plans” within the next 24 hours. We’ll keep you posted.

Original Post:

According to Ben Nicholson-Smith and Shi Davidi for Sports Net Canada, the Blue Jays are making a push for George Springer. The Blue Jays and Mets have been seen as the finalists for the star outfielder for a long time now.

The news that they are making a push for Springer is not surprising but in the article, they noted: “The sides were expected to re-connect early this week and may have already done so, industry sources said.”

The other thing of note is that while he prefers to play in New York, playing in Toronto would not be an obstacle for the Blue Jays. If the money is roughly the same, the Mets would probably have an advantage but if Toronto makes him a God Father offer, I doubt Springer would take less money to play in New York.

Yesterday, it was reported by Jon Morosi of MLB Network that Springer could make his decision this week. This reporting would seemingly agree with that timeline.

In conjecture with the Springer news, the Blue Jays have signed Tyler Chatwood and are reportedly nearing a deal for Kirby Yates.
