Trevor May ‘Keeping Fingers Crossed’ That Mets Sign Springer

0 8

Every day that George Springer remains unsigned, the anticipation builds for Mets fans who hope to see the three-time All-Star playing center field in Queens next season.

When the offseason began, the first major move that Sandy Alderson made was to sign reliever Trevor May to a two-year, $15.5 million contract. May has since gotten the chance to sit back and watch as the Mets have remained one of the most active teams in addressing their roster further.

Now, like the fan base, May hopes to see some more roster moves made, as he told the New York Post‘s Mike Puma that he is “keeping his fingers crossed” that the Mets land Springer.

“I think that would be — I don’t even want to call it a cherry on top, because I don’t know if they would even be finished at that point — but [Springer] would be phenomenal. I can’t imagine what the buzz in the Mets’ world would be with the fans, I can’t even wrap my head around it.” May told Puma.

Prior to signing with the Mets, May had spent his entire big league career with the Minnesota Twins. During his time in Minnesota, May was aided by some great defense out in center field, as Gold Glover Byron Buxton played the position.

After witnessing the defensive impact Buxton had, May knows the value that a quality center fielder brings to the table.

“So when you can get that kind of defense, which Springer definitely has and I don’t think we can say enough about his hitting and how big of a threat he is in the box, too. Having a really dynamic center fielder is big for a team and [Springer] is one of the best out there.”

There is no question that the Mets would be a far superior team if they were able to sign Springer and shift Brandon Nimmo over to left field. In doing so, New York would feature one of the best outfield in all of baseball, to go along with all of the other talent that is already on the roster.

Only time will tell where Springer lands, but at least for now there is one 6-foot-5 relief pitcher that desperately hopes it’s with the Mets.
