Jeffrey Flanagan talks to Dayton Moore about the decision to non-tender Maikel Franco.
“It was a difficult decision,” Moore told MLB.com of Franco’s non-tender. “He really did a great job for us. But going forward we felt we had internal options at third base, including Hunter Dozier, [prospects Kelvin] Gutierrez and [Emmanuel] Rivera.”
In terms of that big bat that Dayton Moore covets for the middle of the order, hearing that the Royals will be scouring the nontenders for a bargain, especially a player hoping to resurrect his career (like Kendrys Morales back in '15). It has worked before.

Mike Minor talked to reporters about what brought him to Kansas City.
Minor, who signed a two-year deal worth a guaranteed $18 million and a club option for a third season on Tuesday, said of reaching an agreement, “I feltlike I owedDayton (Moore) and the organization something from the last time I was there, the way they gave me an opportunity after having surgery and then not pitching and only pitching one year for them. So I felt committed to Kansas City , and I liked my time there.”
The Royals signed one-year deals with Hunter Dozier, Jorge Soler, Jesse Hahn, and Franchy Cordero, pleasing Dayton Moore.
“[We] continue to work on more players [to sign],” Royals general manager Dayton Moore said. “Some [deals] are a little trickier. So far the players we have been able to work deals with have been very realistic about their position in the open market. We appreciate their cooperation.”
Baseball America ranks and reviews the top prospects in the Royals’ farm system. Bill Mitchell did a chat session and listed his favorite prospect outside the top 30.
’ll talk about one that I was eager to see in instructional league and he didn’t disappoint. John McMillon was an undrafted senior from Texas Tech, who in a normal year would have probably gone in rounds 6-10. He’s got a big, big fastball that touched 100 this fall, sitting 95-97. What kept him from getting drafted was the command and control issues he had in college. I’m eager to see what the Royals pitching development program can do for him, and he was already impressing scouts in instructs. He’s also got a potential plus slider when he commands it better. It’s a max effort delivery and he’s a reliever all the way. Certainly one to keep on the radar.
