Mets Non-Tender Left-Handed Reliever Chasen Shreve
The first causality of the non-tender deadline is in for the Mets, as Chasen Shreve is now a free agent. MLB insider Robert Murray was the first to report the news that Shreve had been non-tendered by New York.
Shreve was a former client of Brodie Van Wagenen and joined the Mets last offseason on a minor league deal. He went on to make the Opening Day roster and remained in the Mets bullpen for the entire season. The left-hander had a good year, pitching to a 3.96 ERA, with 34 strikeouts in 25 innings pitched.
The 30-year-old would have been in his final year of arbitration and was out of options. There is still a chance that Shreve could return to the Mets on a minor league deal, but he also could receive a fair amount of interest on the open market due to his success in the shortened season.
Shreve’s strikeout rate of 33.3% put him in the 91st percentile among pitchers in 2020, while his Whiff% ranked in the 96th percentile.
After non-tendering Shreve, the Mets 40-man roster currently sits at 37, which is important as they are expected to sign at least three more players to major league deals.
