Mets Reportedly Pursuing Outfielder George Springer

0 5

This offseason, the Mets are sure to be connected to most — if not all — the major free agents, as the era of Steve Cohen owning the team begins.

That continued on Monday, as Andy Martino of SNY.tv reports that New York is pursuing free agent outfielder George Springer.

Springer, 31, is one of the most appealing names on the open market and is likely going to secure one of the more lucrative contracts this winter.

The right-handed hitting outfielder and natural center fielder would be a perfect marriage in Queens, but it won’t come without hurdles, as the Toronto Blue Jays are reportedly heavily interested in the longtime Houston Astro’s services.

In the shortened 2020 season, Springer appeared in 51 games and hit to a .265/.359/.540 clip with 14 home runs, a 146 wRC+ and .379 wOBA. In 338.0 innings in center field, he also accumulated six defensive runs saved, but had a -0.4 UZR.

Springer is a three-time All-Star and clubbed 39 long balls as recently as 2019.

While free agency is still in its infantile stages and the major free agents still on the board, there will surely be a lot of these type of rumors. However, the Mets are expected to make at least one, but perhaps more big splashes.
