2020 Review

The Mets received Kilome from the Phillies at the 2018 trade deadline in exchange for Asdrubal Cabrera, and he missed the entirety of the 2019 season as a result of Tommy John surgery.

After working his way back to pitching shape across the span of an entire year, Kilome was slotted in as a mop-up man in the bullpen, coming in multiple times across the 2020 season to pitch in long relief after members of the Mets’ unreliable pitching staff were taken out in the early innings of ballgames.

His major league debut came on Aug. 1, as he was put in to face the mighty Braves’ bats after Michael Wacha went just four innings. Kilome went four himself, and gave up two hits on two earned runs, along with five strikeouts.

Kilome then sat the bench for two weeks before he was called upon again to finish up a game against the Marlins on Aug. 17. After four Mets’ pitchers combined for six strong innings, Kilome came into the seventh, and he lasted the rest of the game, albeit not very efficiently. He went three innings and allowed two earned runs on four hits and five walks, picking up his first major league save in the Mets’ 11-4 victory.

Another two weeks went by before Kilome made another appearance on Sept. 1 on the road against the Orioles. This outing was far less successful than his last, as he gave up four earned runs on five hits and a walk over three innings of relief, slotting his first career loss in the game.

Kilome made his final outing of the season on Sept. 18 against Atlanta once again, and this appearance was his worst of the year. He was called upon to relieve Steven Matz of a horrendous outing, but he did nothing but add to the mess, giving up six earned runs on three hits and three walks.

Kilome struggled a lot with his control in his first year in the majors, walking an average of 7.1 batters per nine innings. Although he did strike out 10.3 batters per nine, he gave up even more knocks, allowing 14 hits over just 11.1 innings of work. His 39 ERA+ was second lowest on the Mets, just in front of Paul Sewald.

2021 Outlook:

Although his 2020 season statistics is well-deserving of the F, Kilome is still just 25-years-old, and 11.1 innings in the major leagues is far too little to judge a player’s outlook. Back in 2017, when he was a member of the Phillies minor league system on both A and AA teams, he slotted a 2.83 ERA over 127 innings pitched.

He has spent a lot of time in the past as a starter, so his role as a long-relief member of the Mets was definitely a change of pace, one that he may not have been prepared for, especially coming off a major injury. Finally, the Mets didn’t give him a lot of chances, and the chances he did get were very spread out. In a more defined role with more opportunities, he may be more successful.

I guess we’ll have to wait and see.
