Lugo Unable to Find Command In Season Finale

0 7

Seth Lugo‘s transition from a bullpen pitcher back to a starter has been a mixed bag, as most of his outings have consisted of elite control and pitch placement or a lack of it altogether.

Sadly his last start of the season mirrored the latter situation with the pitcher giving up six runs on five hits in only a little more than an inning pitched.

The thirty-year-old started his outing with a leadoff double to Andrew Stevenson and a walk to Juan Soto soon after, Yadiel Hernandez hit a sacrifice fly to bring home Stevenson giving the Nationals their first run, but Lugo managed to minimize the damage by delivering his only strikeout of the day to Yan Gomes to end the inning.

Going into the second inning is where he unraveled beyond the point of recovery, as he allowed a leadoff walk to Brock Holt and a single to Josh Harrison.

With Lugo unable to regain his composure he hit Victor Robles with a pitch, Stevenson then doubling to push home Holt and Hamilton. After allowing a pair of singles to Trea Turner and Soto, Lugo exited the game in defeat.

Lugo’s final line: 1.1 IP, 5 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 2 BB, 1 K, 38 pitches/24 strikes

“For me, you try not to worry about other teams, what they’re doing,” Lugo said post-game.

“It’s tough to swallow regardless. But at the end of the day, we’ve got to go out there and execute and do our jobs, and that’s the only thing we can control. And we didn’t.” Lugo explained in regard to how he feels about the Mets falling short of a post-season berth.

With the Mets having a really tough season despite starting out hopeful, manager Luis Rojas elaborated saying “Just some things that happened in the game that are definitely not pleasant to witness, to see, develop,” after today’s 16-4 loss.

Rojas went on to say that he thinks that the season would have unfolded differently if they were able to play 162 games per usual and this was “another tough loss.”

Lugo finishes off the 2020 season with a 6.15 ERA in seven starts and 2.61 ERA in nine relief appearances. His overall 5.15 ERA in 36 2/3 innings is a career-worst.

Going into next season it’ll be interesting to watch what Lugo’s status is as a starter or bullpen pitcher as one the team has a full rotation.
