The first four hitters of Cleveland’s lineup led the charge against the divisional rival White Sox in a 7-4 victory. The Tribe’s magic number is now one, and if the Mariner’s lose tonight they are officially postseason bound for the fourth time in five years.

Aaron Civale earned his fourth win of the season despite a rocky fifth inning. The bullpen bounced back after a few rough outings to preserve it, and James Karinchak’s curveball picked up an odd nickname in the process.

At the Plate

Five dingers. Five days. Not a bad stretch of production for AL MVP candidate Jose Ramirez. In addition to a three-run home run in the top of the first, the Indians’ 3B doubled and drew a walk, scoring twice. Cesar Hernandez and Francisco Lindor also notched two hits, but Josh Naylor paced the club with three hits. He...didn’t slide so much as crumple into second base as he completed his second double, though. Oscar Mercado finished the game in his stead. At “press time” there were no updates as to the state of his health, but it would be upsetting to lose him right when it seemed like he’d figured things out.

He walked two batters and loaded the bases in the first before he escaped without allowing a run. From there the second, third, and fourth innings passed without any major incidents before command of his fastball began to slip. In consecutive at-bats to Jose Abreu and Eloy Jimenez, his low-90s heater floated over the middle of the plate; the result was four runs batted in.

Despite faltering in the fifth he finished off the sixth before handing things over to Nick Wittgren. He struck out the side in order. James Karnichak walked one but allowed no other baserunners in the eighth. He also threw this majestic beast:

Brad Hand finished off the Sox and earned a save with a couple of strikeouts of his own.

• Jose Ramirez picked up two errors tonight. One came courtesy of a poor throw to first, while another came via a fielding error. Not a great not, but it didn’t haunt the team.
• Aaron Civale has a bit of a knack for “look what I found” plays. He’s cataloged them on his twitter account. He nearly picked up another one tonight, but instead he dropped it and started a double play. I’m not sure if he did this on purpose or not, but I’m willing to give it the benefit of the doubt here.
• Delino DeShields made a leaping effort early in the game and bashed his head against the wall. He redeemed himself later with an excellent leaping catch in the top of the ninth to rob Tim Anderson of extra bases and a likely RBI.

Tomorrow night the Indians send Cal Quantrill out to “start”. We’ll see how long he goes, but it the feel of a bullpen game.
