Standings Update: Mets Inch Closer to Playoff Spot

0 2

The Mets had another come-from-behind win on Thursday night, when they beat the Phillies 10-6 after scoring four runs in the top of the ninth.

For the second straight night, the starter didn’t make it past the second inning but the offense and bullpen picked up the slack.

Brandon Nimmo was the hero last night with a game-tying two-run triple in the sixth and game-winning homer in the ninth.

Erasmo Ramirez and Chasen Shreve both tossed 2 1/3 innings of scoreless ball out of the bullpen.

Playoff Picture

With the win, the Mets moved to one and half games behind the Phillies for the final wild card spot in the 2020 extended playoff format. The Giants are one game ahead of the Phillies for the first wild card spot.

The Mets were also able to jump over one team in the chase for the wild card, the Rockies after they lost on Thursday to the Dodgers. The Mets at 23-27 still have the Brewers (23-26) and the Cardinals (22-24) between them and the Phillies.

According to FanGraphs, the Mets playoff chances jumped up to 27.2% going into Friday.

Looking Ahead

The road gets tougher for the Mets as they head home to host a three-game series with the first place Braves (29-21) on Friday night. Steven Matz returns to the rotation tonight, with David Peterson scheduled to start on Saturday, and presumably Rick Porcello on Sunday.

Giants have a tough task ahead as they travel to Oakland to battle the first place A’s (31-19) for three.

Phillies start a four-game series with a doubleheader against Blue Jays (26-23) on Friday.

The Brewers host a three-game series with the lowly Royals (21-29) this weekend.

Cardinals have the easiest schedule this weekend, with four against the worst team in the National League – the 15 and 34 Pirates.
