Dominic Smith Rebounds With Big Day At The Plate

0 4

After his misplay in left field in Friday, leading to the Giants’ 10th-inning walk-off win, New York Mets standout Dominic Smith all but put that episode behind him with a terrific day at the dish on Saturday, leading the charge in the Mets’ 11-4 win over San Francisco.

Smith’s 3-for-5 day began with his 10th home run of the season — 106.5 mph exit velocity, 433 feet, and anew career-high — staking the Mets to a 1-0 lead in the second.

His one-out single in the fourth stretched that lead to 2-0, scoring Todd Frazier from third after he legged out his second triple of the year.

In the ninth, Dom’s two-RBI single put the Mets ahead 10-1 and capped off another watermark day at the plate for one of Flushing’s most beloved sons.

His four-RBI game matched his previous career-high, set earlier this week versus Minnesota, and, despite some regression, Smith’s .293/.370/.537 slash line speaks volumes as to how far the third-year, former first-round draft pick’s progress has come.

In the field, Dom’s summarily blocked at his natural position, first base, by rookie phenom, Pete Alonso, but Smith has adapted extremely well to his new surroundings in left field and continued to take advantage of nearly every opportunity he’s been given.

Regardless of Friday night’s costly gaffe, the 24-year-old head into Saturday with zero defensive runs saved and a -0.4 ultimate zone rating in 200 innings in left; it’s not ideal, but that will do.

As long as Dom Smith continues to hit as he has thus far, the Mets will surely continue to find a spot for him in the lineup on a nearly daily basis.

After the win, Smith spoke to the media regarding the importance of continuously moving forward in this game, especially after a valley like the one he found himself in on Friday.

“That’s just how baseball is. You can’t get too high, you can’t get too low,” Smith said (video via SNY). “I just wanted to turn the page from [Friday]. Obviously, I know I cost us the game. That’s something that none of us in here wants to do. To come back today and play well and [have] the team play well, it’s fun.”

It sure is. Let’s do more of that.
