BRITISH badminton star William Thomas has been injured after a van driver was killed in a crash with a lorry.

The Englishman suffered slight injuries alongside world champion Kento Momota, but others were not so lucky, including a driver of a minibus in Kuala Lumpur.

Pictures from the incident showed the vehicle crashed into the back of a 30-tonne lorry, which killed the driver instantly.

World No1 Kento Momota, 25, suffered a broken nose, fractured cheekbone and had stitches on his lips following the smash before dawn this morning.

After the crash, the four passengers were able to walk away from the wreckage.

All four players in the van are in a stable condition, confirmed the Malaysian sports minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman.

He said: “According to the doctors, so far all four are recovering well and are in a stable condition.

“We are monitoring all of them very closely.

“As the minister, we give our full commitment to ensure that they receive the best treatment.

“The doctors are well trained and have done a great job.”

Japanese star Momota is favourite to win gold at the Tokyo Olympics in July — but this accident could give his preparations a major setback.

After beating Denmark’s Viktor Axelsen on Sunday to win the Malaysia Masters, Momota pocketed a £23,000 cheque.
