‘Impossible’ to contact Michael Schumacher – Briatore
Jan.28 (GMM) Reports suggesting an improvement in the condition of Michael Schumacher have drawn reaction from across the motorsport world, including fellow seven-time champion Vladimir Chagin.
Speaking in Moscow to TASS, Chagin – a seven-time winner of the Dakar Rally – said news that Schumacher is no longer bedridden was encouraging.
“Schumacher is a great, legendary driver, very capable and talented,” Chagin said. “I’m glad his health has improved. This is very positive and good news.”
The comments followed a report by the Daily Mail claiming Schumacher can now move around in a wheelchair with assistance, though the family continues to tightly guard details of his condition.
Meanwhile Flavio Briatore, who worked closely with Schumacher during their championship-winning years at Benetton, said direct contact with the former Ferrari driver is no longer possible.
“I’m still in touch with Corinna, but unfortunately that’s impossible with Michael,” Briatore told Swiss publication 20 Minuten.
Briatore, the top advisor at Alpine, said he prefers to remember Schumacher as he was during their time together.
“I remember the time with him well. We experienced fantastic times,” he said. “I always want to remember him that way.”
