MTC Tech Tip: Accurately Measuring the Slider Air Gap

MTC Engineering continues to provide racers and builders with valuable Tech Tips designed to help them get the most out of their clutch systems. The latest release focuses on one of the most critical steps in clutch tuning: Measuring the Slider Air Gap.

A proper air gap is essential to achieving consistent and controlled clutch engagement. MTC Engineering’s new Tech Tip explains a simple process to calculate this important measurement using basic tools or the MTC Air Gap Measuring Tool — designed specifically to make this job faster and more precise.

How it works:

  • Step A: Measure the total depth of the clutch assembly.
  • Step B: Measure the depth of the pressure plate.
  • Formula: A – B = Air Gap

MTC recommends a typical target air gap of 0.050”, but this can be fine-tuned based on application and track conditions.

Tools such as the MTC Air Gap Gauge and Slider Shims are available directly from MTC Engineering to assist in achieving the perfect setup.
