Speedy’s Racing, the multiple FIM-E Super Twin championship winning team of Marcus Christiansen and father Claus, continue their undefeated reign in competition to head the season’s points chase. However, the competition is getting very tight and the Danish duo are far from complacent. Following on from the Summit Equipment Internationals, we caught up with Marcus for his thoughts on the forthcoming challenges:
“After a strong weekend at Tierp Arena we head into the final two rounds of the FIM European Championship as points leaders. The fight is still wide open with Per Bengtsson and Vesa Lipponen right behind us. To stay ahead we know we will need to deliver our very best ETs at both remaining races.
Our new double chain and chain guide, introduced after the chain failure earlier this year, have been working flawlessly. The bike feels stable. At Tierp we also tested new clutch setups during qualifying and bye runs, which explains some of the slower times. These changes are aimed at pushing us even further. If The Beast [Bengtsson’s parallel twin] can go 6.05 we need to respond, and we believe there is more performance to be found.
A big talking point right now is the calendar clash with Mosten Raceday. It is frustrating that the championship round at Hockenheim has been scheduled on the same weekend as Mosten’s 30th anniversary. Many of the sport’s biggest names have chosen to go to Mosten instead and we completely understand why. It is one of the best events in Europe with incredible support from fans.
Originally, we also considered skipping Hockenheim to be at Mosten, but out of respect for Per we want to keep the championship battle alive. He deserves a proper fight for the title, not a walkover. So while it is disappointing to miss our home race and the Mosten community this year, we feel a responsibility to push on in the championship and represent the sport at the highest level.
Mechanically things are looking strong. We have just done standard service and checks with no major problems. The upcoming back-to-back rounds at Hockenheim and Santa Pod will be a big challenge logistically, but thanks to our Belgian friends Chris, Marc, and Jimmy we will have a pit stop between events with tools, support, and good company.
And yes, the much-debated exhaust funnels (also known as rocket nozzles, coffee pots, or afterburners) are staying on the bike. They look wild, but they are doing their job and maybe giving us that little edge in the title fight.
As always, we could not do this without the support of our sponsors. Thank you to Ransborg Salg og Service, Kematek-Sunoco, Mosten MC, Allingåbro Motorfestival, Magic Carpet Store, and everyone else who helps keep us on track.
Two rounds left, the points lead in hand, and plenty still to fight for!”
FIM-E Super Twin is getting to the stage where 6.2s (and better) are a must to get into the top of the qualifying sheets. Christiansen already has cracked the 6.0s with the World’s quickest unblown bike and a consistent handle on the setup so it will take something special to knock them off the top spot.
