The Dutch in Orange: Max Verstappen’s Father’s Mighty McLaren in Action at Zwartkops Passion for Speed – February 1, 2025

The roar of legends is coming to Zwartkops! On February 1, 2025, Michiel Campagne will showcase the stunning, big blue McLaren M8F Can-Am car during the Passion for Speed event. This extraordinary car has an incredible history—it was once owned by Jos Verstappen, father of Formula 1 superstar Max Verstappen.

This McLaren M8F competed in the USA and Europe, forming part of the iconic Sports Racing Car Series of the late 1960s and early 1970s. These machines were the epitome of brute force, producing between 800 and 1,400 horsepower. Back then, advanced technologies like ground effects and electronic management were virtually non-existent. The series thrived on raw power, high risk, and huge public interest until it concluded in 1974 due to the sheer speed and brutality of the cars.

Despite the series ending, these incredible machines continue to make history, participating in high-profile historic racing events worldwide.

At Zwartkops, the McLaren M8F will be piloted by Michiel Campagne in the International Sports Racing Prototypes event. This thrilling race will see the McLaren go up against powerful Lola T70 Coupes driven by Larry Wilford and Neil Lobb, as well as the open Lola T70s of Mark du Toit and Russel Fear.

Adding to the excitement, the tighter corners of the Zwartkops circuit will play to the strengths of the nimble sports racing Chevrons driven by Jonathan du Toit, Colin Ellison, and Stephan Clark. Meanwhile, the mighty Le Mans Porsche RSRs and the iconic Porsche 917 of Peter Bailey will keep the competition fierce.

It’s worth noting the deep connection this McLaren has to the “orange army.” Long before Max Verstappen’s success in Formula 1 ignited the passion of Dutch fans, Jos Verstappen was already racing with the support of his loyal followers.
