Multiple IMSA LMP3 Teams Evaluating LMP2 For 2024

0 4

The extension of eligibility of the current LMP2 cars to the end of the 2025 IMSA Weathertech Sportscar Championship coupled with significant uncertainty over the future in the Championship of the LMP3 class, is set to see a significant reshuffle in the supporting prototype classes.

DSC is aware that at least three current LMP3 teams are actively evaluating LMP2 programmes for 2024 with at least one class multi-race-winning squad in active discussions with ORECA over acquisition of cars for next season.

Paddock sources suggest that IMSA are considering a number of options for the future of LMP3 outside their top-tier series, potentially in addition to the new-for 2023 VP Racing Sportscar Challenge which offers a single-driver sprint race format for Bronze ranked drivers in both LMP3 and GT4 (GSX) classes.

IMSA President John Doonan has written to all teams confirming the extension of the current LMP2 regulations to the end of the 20-25 season and added too that the future of LMP3 will be communicated by 1 June 2023.
