GT3 Premium Is Go For 2024, But Just What Is It?

0 3

In confirming the switch from GTE-Am regulations to a GT3-based formula from 2024 for the FIA WEC (and now confirmed too for the European Le Mans Series for 2024 too*), the ACO also announced that the formula would involve the concept of GT3 Premium.

GT3 Premium though was not explained at the time and has not been expanded on much in the public domain since then either though DSC understands there will be a much more comprehensive explanation before the end of the current WEC season.

Behind closed doors, though there has been much discussion between the sanctioning body and all manufacturers on the concept.

DSC can reveal that it is almost solely concerned with aerodynamic performance, defining a performance window around drag/ downforce that cars in the new class must meet.

Several industry sources have confirmed that some current and near-future GT3 cars can already achieve the performance window, others will need minor tweaks, and others, still a more comprehensive package of measures to get there.

The changes, which are still cost-capped, though that cap level is not yet known, having previously been described to DSC by senior sources as “50-100,000 Euros per car.” are unlikely to be particularly radical though in some cases may make a minor but noticeable visual difference to some cars.

Those same industry sources also confirmed to DSC that there were no dissenters and that all present in the discussions are ‘on board’ with the concept.

All cars could be easily switched between GT3 Premium and standard GT3 specifications.

* The Michelin Le Mans Cup is set to retain GT3 cars in standard spec.
