#4 Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs 4 vs #3 Minnesota State Mavericks 3 OT

The 4th-ranked Bulldogs opened the Desert Hockey Classic in Glendale Friday night against the #3-ranked Minnesota State, rallying from 3-2 second intermission deficit to win in overtime. Bolt prospect Cole Koepke notched an assist as UMD scored twice within the span of a minute in the 1st period to take an early 2-0 lead. The Mavericks struck back for three straight before Kobe Roth (undrafted) scored a power play marker in the 3rd to force overtime and Nick Swaney’s (MIN, 2017 7th round pick) game-winner in the extra session. UMD, now sporting an 11-4-2 (4-3-1 NCHC) record, will take on #19 Clarkson in the Desert Classic final on Saturday night after the Golden Knights blanked Arizona State Friday.

The Pioneers emerged from the holiday break on the road in North Andover with a win over Merrimack, scoring a goal in each of the three period before letting in a lone Warriors goal with less than 90 seconds left in the game, The Pioneers improve to 9-4-2 (4-4 NCHC) and take on Bolt prospect Ryan Lohin and UMass-Lowell on Saturday night.

The Golden Gophers scored three straight, winning Friday’s match against visiting Ferris State and looking to reboot their season. Lightning prospect Sammy Walker, recently cut from the USA WJC camp, set up Scott Reedy’s (SJS, 2017 4th round pick) hat trick late in the 3rd period. For Walker, that was his 12th point on the season as freshman, now moving ahead of fellow Bolt prospect Cole Guttman’s 11 points on the season. In addition to Reedy’s hat trick, Minnesota got a goal and an assist from Predators prospect Rem Pitlick and three assists from Blue Jackets propect Robbie Stucker. The Gophers improve to 6-6-4 (3-2-3 B1G) and draw the rematch Saturday night against Ferris State.
