Messiah women also hosting games this weekend

It’s been quite a ride for Swarthmore’s men’s soccer team over the past couple weeks.

After missing out on the Centennial Conference tournament, they were still awarded an at-large bid to the Division III NCAA Tournament and survived the first weekend knocking off No. 17 Roanoke College and No. 23 Christopher Newport with PK shootout wins on back-to-back nights in Virginia.

Now, the improbable run for the Garnets will continue back at home this weekend when they host Connecticut College and welcome Tufts and Washington & Lee for rounds 3 and 4 of the tournament. The team that survives the weekend will punch a ticket to the semifinals in Cary, North Carolina.

Swarthmore, which is into the Sweet 16 for the sixth time and first time since 2012, is one of three men’s teams from the area still left in the tournament field along with two women’s teams.

Messiah’s women will host Trinity in Grantham, Pa. at 11 a.m. on Saturday and should they win will play the winner of Williams and Tufts at 1 p.m. on Sunday. The Messiah men’s team is playing at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday in Amherst, Mass. against Rensselaer. Rowan plays in the earlier game in Amherst against the hosts at 11 a.m.

The Dickinson women’s team plays Johns Hopkins on Saturday in Geneva, N.Y. at 1:30 p.m.
