A’s injury updates: Checking in on the disabled list

0

The A’s have 8 players on the DL.

Happy Friday, Athletics Nation! The Elephant Rumblings link roundup will be delayed today, so instead let’s have a quick look at the Oakland A’s disabled list.

There are currently eight players on the DL, six on the 10-day and two on the 60-day. The A’s beat writers have offered some updates on most of them over the last week/month, so let’s see where everyone stands. In particular, you should check out this latest post from Susan Slusser of the S.F. Chronicle for all the details.

Jharel Cotton, RHP

60-day | Tommy John surgery

It’s no secret that Cotton is out for the year, but at least he’s making progress in his recovery.

Paul Blackburn, RHP

60-day | Forearm strain

When we hear the words “forearm strain” we tend to fear the worst. So far that’s not the case, as Blackburn is pitching at extended spring training and is looking forward to a rehab assignment soon, reports Slusser. He’ll still be a while, so don’t hold your breath, but any news that doesn’t involve surgery is obviously encouraging.

Andrew Triggs, RHP

10-day | Triceps strain, arm nerve irritation

Triggs left his start a week ago due to numbness in his fingers, and he went on the DL the next day. That news made it easy for the imagination to run wild, but this sounds about as mild as anyone could have hoped.

Insider Jane Lee also noted on Tuesday (i.e. a few days ago) that Triggs would be reevaluated in a few days.

Brett Anderson, LHP

10-day | Shoulder strain

The news is that there isn’t any news yet. Anderson left his start last Friday due to the shoulder issue.

Ryan Buchter, LHP

10-day | Shoulder strain

The A’s top lefty reliever has been out for nearly a month. Slusser reports that he’s resumed throwing and will get back on a mound in the near future. On one hand that’s encouraging because his recovery is underway, but on the other hand his return is not yet imminent (at least multiple weeks still).

Liam Hendriks, RHP

10-day | Hip, cyst

He’s been out over a month but is feeling much better after his operation, reports Slusser. Look for him on a rehab assignment soon. This is Hendriks’ third season in Oakland, and it’s the second time his slow start to the year has turned out to involve an injury. Last time (2016, triceps), he came back healthy and dominated for the final four months of the summer.

Khris Davis, DH

10-day | Groin strain

Khrush suffered a Grade 1 strain to his groin on Sunday. For what it’s worth, that’s the least severe grade on the scale (from 1 to 3, with 3 being a full rupture/tear). He went on the DL on Wednesday (retroactive to Monday), but sounded upbeat about his status at the time.

Even if he doesn’t literally come back in the minimum time, it’s nice to hear that this isn’t considered serious right now and that the player’s spirits are high.

Boog Powell, OF

10-day | Knee sprain

Powell has been out almost all season, hitting the DL retroactive to April 7. Note that this update is from last week, and the Blackburn/Hendriks part of the tweet is older than their news above.

Best of luck to all the injured A’s in their recoveries!
