Hogs Open Postseason Play Saturday in Round Two of NIVC

The Arkansas volleyball program will embark on its first postseason journey since 2013 this weekend as the team is set to compete in the National Invitational Volleyball Championship.

The Hogs were the only team to receive a first round bye in the NIVC field and will take on the winner of Stephen F. Austin or Jackson State in Nacogdoches, Texas on Saturday at 7 p.m. The first round match-up between the Ladyjacks and the Tigers is set for 6:30 p.m. on Friday.

Stephen F. Austin enters the tournament with a 17-13 record, good for second place in the Western Athletic Conference Southwest Division. The Hogs saw the team early in the regular season at the Tulsa Tournament and came away with a four-set victory. Arkansas took the first (25-19), third (25-21) and fourth sets (25-23) for the match victory while the Ladyjacks won the second set 25-23.

Jackson State wrapped up its regular season with an overall record of 17-13 and went 15-1 in conference (SWAC). The Tigers earned their second-straight regular season SWAC championship and fell just short of the conference tournament crown in a five-set loss against Florida A&M.

Arkansas has never faced Jackson State in program history, but the two teams shared four common opponents in the regular season: Auburn, Louisiana Tech, Montana State and Mississippi State. The Hogs went 3-1 in their matches against these teams while the Tigers were 0-4.

The Razorbacks take a 19-10 overall record and 10-8 SEC record into the postseason, which tied for fifth in conference. The team’s 19 wins are its most since 2017, and all but one loss came against teams that were ranked during the regular season.

For the third consecutive year, the Hogs had players receive SEC postseason honors as junior Jill Gillen was named All-SEC and rookie libero Courtney Jackson was placed on the All-Freshman team. Gillen was also tabbed as SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the second time.

The NIVC was revived in 2017 after a 22-year hiatus, and it’ll be the Razorbacks’ first appearance in the tournament since then. Arkansas also participated in the 1994 and 1995 seasons.

The tournament provides an additional postseason opportunity for Division I volleyball programs that miss the 64-team NCAA field. The 2020 NIVC was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but each of the tournament winners from 2017-2019 – Ole Miss, Iowa State and Georgia Tech – were all named to the 64-team field in 2021.

The third round of the tournament is slated for Dec. 6-8, the semifinals for Dec. 8-11 and the championship Dec. 12-14.

Stephen F. Austin will stream Saturday’s match via ESPN+ with first serve is set for 7 p.m. Live stats will also be provided by SFA.
