Outdoor shooting season wraps up at South Vancouver Island Rangers archery range

Regular outdoor shooting at the South Vancouver Island Rangers on Wednesday evenings and Saturdays has ended for the season. There will be Saturday sessions on a ‘To Be Announced’ schedule, the Ranger Calendar is online and if its says ‘Archery’ there will be someone there. Weekend or weekday sessions can be scheduled by contacting Greg and or Al. Contrary to some statements women are welcome at any session.

BC Winter Games trials

Cowichan Bowmen will be hosting BC Winter Games Zone 6 Trials ob Saturday, November 29th. See the poster below for details.

Upcoming Instructor of Beginner Archers coaching clinic

We have been approved for an Instructor of Beginner Archers Coaching Course, which will be held in the fall or winter. If you are interested, please have a look at the requirements on the BC Archery Coaching page. The course will be held locally with Victoria Bowmen instructors. If you are interested, please leave your name with the President. The Victoria Bowmen will assist in funding successful participants.

Range Safety Officers and Judges needed

We are always in need of some more Range Safety Officers (RSOs) to help run our club shoots safely. If you’d like to get certified, the training is free and all online, and the test is ‘open book’. You’ll find more details on the Archery Canada Website. Once you’ve completed it, you can then be added to the club list of RSOs.

We also need some qualified Judges to help officiate tournaments. If you’re interested in taking the training for this, please contact Al Wills for more information.

Shooting etiquette reminders

As you know, our regular Thursday and Sunday club shoots are usually quite busy, so we’d like to remind everyone of the basic etiquette and procedures for indoor shooting so that everyone gets ample opportunity to shoot.

  • Come early, stay late –  everyone needs to pitch in for set up and take down.
  • When you arrive, put up a target, that is your shooting spot. If you arrive after, find a butt with an open space and put up a target between ends. If it looks full, remember we can accommodate 3 on a butt. Just find a butt with fast shooters and join them.
  • Don’t be intimidated by being last on the line, we’ll wait. But remember, 3 arrows only as it’s not fair to have others wait for you to shoot extra arrows.
  • Yes, we could shoot 2 lines (4 targets to a butt), but 2 lines means only half as much time for shooting, so we want to stick to one line.
  • If you want to shoot close up and we’re full, try and keep it to one butt close (share).
  • If you have ANY questions, just ask the whistle blower, we want you to enjoy yourself!

Thanks to all for your cooperation!
