Welcome to 2022 at Guildford Archery Club

0 11

I hope that you all had a great Christmas and New Year break and managed to make up for the damp squib that last Christmas was!

As we start the new year with the minimum of Covid restrictions in place, I think that we might start to believe that this year we can enjoy our archery even more fully than last year.

With this in mind, I thought that I would outline some of the many opportunities that there are for you to enjoy your archery over the coming months;

Why not shoot outdoors?

Don’t forget that our grounds at Manor Fruit Farm are open all year round for your use. Just book a session via the Sign Up Genius (and don’t forget to take your target face)

You can go straight to Sign Up Genius for outdoor sessions by clicking here

If you’d like to shoot with other members, there is a small group that meet regularly on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays between 10.00 and 12.00, and you are most welcome to shoot with them. No particular round, just a bit of companionship!

You could shoot a Frostbite round

If you enjoy shooting outside, why not shoot and score a ‘Frostbite’ round? – It consists of 3 dozen arrows, shot in ends of 6 at an 80cm target face, with metric scoring (10 zone).

Please record your score on the paper score sheets that are kept in the racks in the clubhouse, and leave completed score sheets in the Records Officer’s pigeon hole beside the clubhouse door.

Each month we submit ‘Teams’ of scores into a Frostbite league, and we need Recurve, Longbow, Barebow and Compound scores, and you can submit as many as you like through the month, and ALL members can enter regardless of age, gender or skill.

You could shoot indoors at Ash Manor School

Don’t forget that there are indoor shooting sessions at Ash Manor school; Tuesday evenings between 8.00pm and 10.00pm, and 2 sessions on Sundays; 1.30pm – 3.30pm and 3.30pm – 6.00pm

There is no specified round on a Tuesday evening, and on Sundays, the first session is for practice and coaching (particularly for novice archers), whilst the second session is for shooting a scored round.

…and shoot a ‘Postal’ Portsmouth

On the Sunday second sessions that have a Portsmouth round specified will be for a scored round of 5 dozen arrows shot in ends of 3 at a 60cm face.

As with the ‘Frostbite rounds, these scores are submitted to a monthly league and EVERY score helps!

You can enter our Club Indoor Championships

On 27th February we are holding our Club Indoor Championships. This will consist of a Portsmouth round and is open to EVERY member of the club.

There are trophies and medals on offer for all senior and junior categories, so my not come along and become a club champion!

Juniors – don’t forget that the regular Saturday mornings
Junior Saturdays are back up and running – shooting, coaching, competition and fun every Saturday between 10.00am and 12.00pm – just book via the Sign Up Genius as before

Get some coaching, help or advice on your shooting

After 2 years of interrupted shooting and a Christmas and New Year break, I am sure that many of us could do with some assistance in our technique and the set up and tuning of our equipment.

If you would like help, then the first of the Sunday Indoor Sessions will have club coaches available to help. However NOTE it is important that when you book into the session, you add a note to say that you would like coaching so that we can ensure enough coaches are available.

Help at our WA25

On Sunday 16th January, the club is hosting its annual Open WA25 Indoor Tournament at the Guildford Spectrum.

The event is a record-status shoot and is an important and prestigious occasion for the club. It is run in 3 sessions over the whole day, and we would really appreciate any help that members can give in the running of the event. If you can spare at least a couple of hours to come and assist, please email the Tournament Organiser, Richard Fitzgerald; targets@guildfordarcheryclub.co.uk

Even if you can’t help, why not pop down to the Spectrum during the day and have a look – it’s quite a sight!
